Celebrating its 118th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Having been to Barbetta many times since I was a child I was distressed to find it was closing. I stopped in on Tuesday, February 17 and spoke with the maitre d' and told her I would come before the closing. I called and booked a reservation for Friday, February 24 at 8:30. This reservation was confirmed TWICE by email and I confirmed I was coming. I arrived at 8:15 pm to find about 20 people waiting for a table. The young girl who was handling the reservations said I did not have a reservation and I showed her the emails confirming the reservation. She said nothing was available but I could wait to see if something became available. I went to the coat room to retrieve my coat and briefcase and spoke to the lady who is normally the maitre d' and she said that she wasn't handling it and to speak to the young lady who had been so rude. Sadly I missed a chance to say goodbye to one of my favorite restaurants. The entire experience ruined all the good times I had over 50 plus years when I used to colme with my parents after the theatre. With a maitre d' as offputting as she was the restaurant wouldn't have lasted a week let alone 120 years.

Loved our restaurant experience and the meal we had at Barbetta's final week. We were sad to see such a wonderful historic mainstay for the area disappear. The last family owned Italian place that defined new Italian-American classics closing its doors was bittersweet to say the least.

So so sad that this iconic restaurant is closing. We had a last dinner there to say goodbye. So many memories. One of the very last iconic old world glamorous NY restaurants. Too bad it hasn’t been bought and continued.
