About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
After 54 years, my customers still tell me what a delightful discovery it is to step out of a Boston alley and into the heart of Mexico. That is exactly what I had envisioned when I decorated the coffered door and walls of my restaurant with the bright Talavera tiles from Puebla, Mexico. Casa Romero is located in the midst of glamorous Back Bay at 30 Gloucester and offers the best traditional Mexican food in Boston.

The food and drinks were good. The service was exceptionally quick, maybe a bit too quick. We felt rushed out. The staff seemed anxious to clear our table and get us out. It was very cute inside but also very loud and crowded. Not sure if it’s always like that or this was just a busy weekend.

Nice buzzy place, very busy and served short staffed last night. Everyone was very friendly in spite of that. Food was decent.

They turned our table in under 60 mins - felt rushed throughout and not sure who was waiting on us (3 different people). Food was just ok. Their signature dish (chicken) was not available and no steak either. For a 6:30 reservation seemed strange. Very disappointing. Won’t be back.

Very disappointing meal. The last time I came here in 2020 before COVID Casa Romero was a true find, a cozy quiet restaurant with delicious upscale flavorful food. Now I found an extremely loud place, with tasteless food. The mole sauce on the chicken enchiladas didn’t have any flavor, missing any hint of chocolate and spices. It was so disappointing 😢

Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. The food was mediocre and lukewarm, and the portion sizes did not justify the prices. The one bright spot was our waitress, who was kind, welcoming, and personable throughout our visit. However, what truly ruined our experience was our interaction with the manager when we attempted to use a $75 gift certificate. The manager came to our table and stated that the certificate had expired, mentioning that she had written it 10 years ago. She offered to comp only $25 of the $75 value, and when we tried to discuss the situation, she became argumentative and rude. At one point, she actually laughed at us, making us feel extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed. She eventually stormed away from the table, stating that the bill was comped. I should add that Under Massachusetts law, a gift certificate or gift card that does not clearly state an expiration date is redeemable in perpetuity (good forever). The gift certificate we presented did not have a clearly stated expiration date on it. We understand that policies may exist regarding gift certificates, but there is absolutely no excuse for treating customers with such disrespect. The situation could have been handled professionally and courteously, but instead, the manager's behavior turned an already disappointing dining experience into an extremely unpleasant one. While we sincerely appreciated our waitress's kindness, the poor food quality, lack of value, and especially the manager's unprofessional behavior left us with a very negative impression. Unfortunately, we will not be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant based on our experience. In addition, I received an alert from OpenTable stating that we did show up for our reservation which is not true.
