The Epitome of Elegance. The lough-facing Connaught Room provides a delightful space in which to enjoy private dining or a delicious traditional Afternoon Tea - a ritual that extends back to 1868 at Ashford Castle, when Lord and Lady Ardilaun would take Afternoon Tea to discuss the events of the morning and the plans for that evening.

The Connaught Room is flanked with floor to ceiling windows commanding spectacular views of the Castle’s manicured gardens and the magnificent Lough Corrib. The room captivates guests with its inspiring Donegal Crystal chandelier, panelled oak walls and a hand carved fireplace.

The menu offers our guests a delightful selection of speciality teas, delicate finger sandwiches with traditional fillings, warm scones, hand-made pastries and cupcakes decorated with lovingly hand-picked wild flowers from the Estate by our Head Pastry Chef, Paula Stakelum.

On my long awaited visit to Ireland I wanted to see this spectacularly beautiful castle and since I couldn't afford a room, and they didn't rent half rooms 😄, I took myself there for tea.
Everything about my experience at Ashford Castle was of the highest degree of quality and caring. The service, surroundings, the tea sandwiches, the pastries (brilliant, there is even a touch of gold leaf on one) the tea service itself, all were stunning. And I felt consistently welcome at every step. I floated out on a clowd of dreamy romance.

Gorgeous setting, delicious food in a quantity that was much greater than needed. Only go if hungry and avoid 19 Euro champagne.

Afternoon tea was an amazing experience from the moment we entered main entrance. Outstanding staff who are a real credit to Ashford castle. They made us feel like nothing was to much trouble. Complementary handmade chocolates were a nice touch when leaving. Cannot rate it highly enough. Fabulous grounds to explore. Wish we could make this a regular treat!!

This was my first proper afternoon tea, and it did NOT disappoint. First, the Connaught Room is gorgeous, with large windows looking onto the lake and grounds, high ceilings, a roaring fireplace, and period decor. Then there was the staff, who were (like all Irishpeople we met throughout our trip) warm, friendly, and happy to answer questions and share a story. Finally, the tea service itself...phenomenal. The sandwiches (4, if I recall), desserts (5), and scones (3) ... (per person!) ... were all delicious, and the tea (I had the Golden Milk) was so good that I ignored my personal rule of no caffeine past noon and drank the entire teapot. We ended up lingering much longer than we thought we would because it was just so relaxing and enjoyable to sit there and chat and drink. Easily one of my favorite experiences on our whole trip.

High tea at Ashford Castle is quite a special experience....from the sandwiches to the scones to the sweet treats--and of course, the selection of tea-- we enjoyed feeling like royalty for a couple of hours at the highlight of our visit to Ireland.

From my perspective the best part of this experience was the grounds and some of the interior. Servers were friendly but forgot to bring our sandwiches, after offering. Room was very very hot. Also I think 190euros is alot of money for 3 people for a small amount of food

Beautiful surroundings. Cakes non descript flavours. Very sweet. Service... left with dirty plates in front of us for a long time. Had to pour our own tea and ask for fresh hot pots . Good experience, but could have been better.

I cannot rate this highly enough. The staff made us feel relaxed and special. This is the kind of treatment you want but finding it rarer to find. This place has it in bucket loads. My mum absolutely loved her time here. As did my daughter who said it was the best day of her life. A massive thanks to the staff for making it so special. Ps. Scones were amazing!

Such a wonderful, enjoyable treat! Only problem was when we paid the bill, my husband added on more than the recommended 12.5% but our waiter omitted to tell him that it was already included in the bill. We realised just afterwards but we're not going to cause a fuss. A little disappointing that the waiter would not inform us, because he obviously knew we were adding on a tip, as we paid by card.
Aside from this, we both enjoyed it immensely, as did my daughter, and will most definitely return.

Unfortunately I have to say that this experience was very disappointing. I had booked this as a surprise for my mother and I had very high expectations from both the reviews I had read & what others had told me. Although, the food was nice, the service was well below what I had expected. The afternoon started out well, when we arrived, we couldn't park outside the hotel as it was full so we were chauffered from a car park to the hotel. Once inside Ashford, we were guided to our table & given menus. My sister & I asked what coffees were available. Instead of giving a range, the server said whatever I wanted. I asked if they did certain coffees and the server quite abruptly said which one is it that you want? She then went off & came back with the food and the drinks& explained that the scones were made to order and there would be a wait which was fine. We were waiting ages before anyone was around to get their attention to order the scones. Once we did, the server asked did we want more drinks. I asked for a cup as I wanted to share the tea my mother had& my sister asked for another coffee. 10 minutes went by & the server came with another Cappuccino for me which I hadn't ordered, no coffee for my sister that she had ordered and a pot of tea for my mother which she hadn't asked for. The order was completely wrong. Then, my sister asked for her coffee as at this stage she had been some time without anything to drink. Instead of bringing it straight down, it didn't arrive until the scones came 10 minutes later. Then, we asked for more milk and had quite a wait before this arrived. In a place like Ashford, I feel we shouldn't have even had to ask & it felt like an inconvenience, the staff should have noticed when they took the scones order. What I also found frustrating was that a couple of tables next to us were being offered additional pastries& scones & much better service. We also were not offered a lift back to the car, just left to walk back to carpark.

We had a lovely afternoon tea at The Connaught Room at Ashford Castle this weekend. The whole experience was wonderful. The staff were brilliant and attentive and it was a really enjoyable and relaxing afternoon. The food was wonderful and plentiful, we couldn't even finish it all so they packaged up the remaining desserts for us to bring with us. The cheese scones with lemon curd were just amazing, definitely our favourite part! Such a lovely weekend treat, will definitely be back again!

Overall we really enjoyed the afternoon tea, there were just a few small things we noted. One waitress I felt was a little brusk in her attitude. We were seated early and one of the party had to use the restroom straight away, as soon as she returned she came over and asked for our drink choice without giving her a minute to look over the menu. I thought that it was a little disappointing that we wasn't offered clean plates and cutlery after the savoury food. We had to request these when the scones arrived. After having egg and mayonnaise one didn't want to spread jam on a scone or eat a chocolate desert off the same plate. Also we were offered new pots of tea but not to have cups replaced. Sometimes when tea has gone cold in a cup it would have been nice to have had a clean cup rather than having to pour fresh tea onto cold tea. The overall experience was lovely, the food and ambience was excellent, just a few minor elements regarding the service which took slightly from the experience.
