- LLisaWashington, D.C. Area •17 reviews4.0Dined on 25 Jul 2026We decided on date-night at Gyu-Kaku since it had been awhile since we last visited. We ordered the Meat Lover's meal since we were both hungry and we like everything in that set. You have to be really hungry to eat this because it comes with A LOT of food. It's all really tasty and they give good portions. It comes with miso soup, salad, an appetizer sushi (steak on rice), edamame, rice, the meats, and S'mores for dessert. The quality of the food is really good. The meats are marinated in their own sauces and are quite tasty. I did not find the need to use the extra sauces but my partner likes to experiment with the sauces. This is supposed to be an Japanese restaurant. We asked for soy sauce and the server told me that they didn't have soy sauce in the restaurant. (WHAT?!) How does an Asian restaurant NOT have soy sauce? The server said he would double check and came back with something that looked like soy sauce, but when we tasted it, we knew it wasn't soy sauce. It is possible that it was really old soy sauce (because it was really dark) or it may have been tamari. All we knew was...it wasn't soy sauce. Note to self: Bring your own soy sauce. The service was great. Our server was friendly and polite. He was easy to laugh and converse with. The one big thing we didn't appreciate was the fact that he ended up bringing ALL of the mean components at the same time. The restaurant wasn't overly busy, so it didn't make sense that everything had to come out all at once. We would have preferred the pacing of enjoying the soup, salad, and appetizers first. Then bring out the meats second. Because by the time we were ready to cook the meats, the flame wasn't as strong and our rice was cold. That was a bit disappointing hence the reason for the 4-stars. Overall though, the food is good. If you enjoy meat and Asian dining and are willing to splurge on a decent meal, then Gyu-Kaku is a great choice.More infoGyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ - Columbia, MD | Lakeside$$$$• Japanese• Columbia•4.7
