Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

    We were a group of 5. Not noisy as we were dining on a weekday evening, so conversation was fantastic. The team on Thursday 13th were amazing. Warm welcome on arrival, prompt attentive service and very knowledgeable with food and beverage choices. Both food, drinks were delicious, service impeccable, and no pressure to depart after completion of meal. Overall a wonderful dining experience-will definitely be returning. The owners should be proud of their staff.

    We love this bar. Of all the cool places in Newcastle, this is our favourite. Great music, excellent drinks and food (definitely get the chacouterie board). The staff are always friendly and good for conversation and suggestions. When we come up from Sydney, a night here is locked in early.
