Growing up in Italy, my family cooked at home and had the most extraordinary experiences with ingredients grown in our backyard, paired with the wines my chef/restaurateur stepfather would bring back from regions throughout Italy. I fell in love with food as a child watching my stepfather, once nominated a top chef in Italy, work in restaurant kitchens and floors. Moving to California in 1991 and subsequently to Santa Monica and experiencing the Farmers Market inspired me to start Orto - Italian for “vegetable garden” - where I meld local ingredients and organic herbs grown here at the restaurant to create traditional Italian recipes. At our bar you’ll find a cocktail list created from fresh herbs and premium spirits, and our wine list focuses on sustainable and organic producers.     Nice location, ask for the Sunset room and if possible near a window overlooking the beach, if at night don't bother, too dark in the winter. Excellent ambiance, started with eggplant dip and yummy poof pita/pizza dough bread, gem salad (dressing excellent). A vodka sauce on the pasta was excellent and the burrata pizza was very mild not too intense in flavor, but light and tasty. The evening ended with an affogato which was made perfectly, with a caramel at the bottom of the ice-cream, and the expresso! Good coffee, great meal, will return to try other items.

    Great cocktails, food and service. The 8 hour lamb shank was amazing, the ratatouille and Brussels sprouts were amazing. Wine prices are too high. Côtes du Rhône at $60 is ridiculous
