Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducass

From the moment that you walk in the door you will feel like you’ve gone back in time. The building feels old ( because it is !) and the floors creak as you walk on them. We were led upstairs to a candlelit dining area with about 10 tables. There were only 3 couples in total upstairs at the 800 pm reservation. John was our server and he was absolutely perfect in. He embodied the spirit of the time period in his dress and mannerisms. The food selections are not what you may expect but don’t let that put you off ! Everything was amazing. We had the To Butter Shrimp, The Westphalia Ham and Game Pie and followed all of John’s suggestions in the combining of relishes that are provided. It elevated the taste that was already delicious. The entertainment was perfect and personalized when the gentleman ( I failed to get his name) asked everyone where they were from and invited us to sing along. We loved every minute of our experience and will ask for John to be our server when we return!

We began with cocktails on the outdoor patio facing Duke of Gloucester Street. The barman David always makes excellent cocktails. He brought a perfect Vesper Martini to the table along with beautiful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Dinner was excellent inside, the halibut special was amazing. As was the mozzarella starter. Our friends enjoyed the pork and chicken dish. We have never had a disappointing meal at Fat Canary. The wine list, bar menu and service our second to none.

My wife and I drove down to La Yaca from Richmond. It was her birthday and we wanted something special. We decided to order our meals a la carte for no other reason than there were items we wanted on the appetizer menu and the dessert menu. My wife had the green salad, onion soup, crab crepe and the apple tart for dessert. She loved it all. I had the vegetarian salad and the scallops both from the appetizer menu. Then I had the poached peach for dessert. All were extraordinary. This was an excellent meal and all things considered a reasonably priced one for food this well prepared and presented. There is not one thing that could have been better. Thank you La Yaca for a very enjoyable evening.
