On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Perfect night for what you would expect from a Restaurant of this calibre. Chateaubriand was served classically and was delicious. Smallest criticism would be the Bernaise sauce which had started to separate and was cold but still very good. Service was excellent and wine choice superb. The building has so much grandeur it feels very special to be there.

Frequent diner at Harry Cipriani in NY so really wanted to try the original. Food was great, service good although they seemed a little short on staff. The waiter and others were very friendly and the overall experience was worth the trip!

I would have rated this higher but for one server who seemed to not enjoy what she was supposed to be doing. Our main server, Angela, was great, but her colleague who helped Angela (minimally and reluctantly) was a downer who never even bothered to fake a smile. Of the two items we ordered, one was very good, one average. We wouldn't go back because if a restaurant can't have pleasant servers, they don't get our repeat business.
