Shawn Shepherd, owner of Wahoo Seafood Grill, grew up helping his mom cook for his six siblings. His family moved from Ohio to Tennessee to Alabama and then to Mississippi, but no matter where they lived, you could always find Shepherd learning how to create a new dishes alongside family, friends, and neighbors... anyone who would let him in their kitchen. He especially loved visiting his grandfather, who owned a seafood restaurant in Pennsylvania. When Shepherd joined the Navy, he wanted to be a cook, but the Navy wouldn't let him because his testing scores were too high. After nearly 7 years, he was honorably discharged and he worked as a cook by day and bartender by night. Eventually, he opened his first restaurant, Shepherd's, in 1999.He went on to operate several successful restaurants after that, and in 2013, he partnered with Butch Monaghan. Together, they opened Wahoo Seafood Grill in Gainesville followed by the Tallahassee location in 2015.

I can’t say enough. My husband and I have been here in Gainesville for 6 months and we come from a very food focused city. We went for his birthday dinner. Mildred’s is easily the best food we have had since moving here! All of the proteins were cooked perfectly, the sauces were fun and delicious, and the atmosphere is comfortable but elegant. The staff is amazing and it seems like owner cares for them. I can’t wait to try them for lunch!

The Friday evenings before a UF game are more energetic. Typical noise levels on most nights are low and the ambience is always very pleasant. My wife and I are fairly regular with our dining at Mark’s in Gainesville. The service is always excellent and food is always delicious!

Our food was delicious. The service was good but not outstanding. The prices are outrageous. It is definitelya. special occasion place because unless you are on an expense account, it is not somewhere you go often.

Not their fault, but we sat outside, which was lovely, but there were two “kids” skateboarding on the sidewalk right next to our table. They were very loud. This is an issue for the Gainesville PD. Something for Amelia’s to bring up with them.
