- VVanessaSan Francisco Bay Area •3 reviews5.0Dined 1 day agoI took my 81 yo Cantonese mom to FANG for lunch. While she loves to eat out, she is notoriously judgmental, especially when it comes to Chinese food. She LOVED the meal! Upon arriving, we were greeted by the Chef/ Owner Cathy Fang, who spoke to my mom in fluent Cantonese. We described our dietary preferences and allergies and let her design a menu for us. The surprise element was really fun. Some of the dishes seemed to be menu items, but others were not listed: 1. Wok fried noodles -- Outstanding. Hot from the wok, the noodles were scented with "wok hei". The tender vegetables were bright and just done. A common dish, but perfectly executed. 2. Fish soup with glass noodles and tofu. -- Delicious. The broth was richly flavored, yet still light. The dish was served in a clay pot over a flame to keep it warm. 3. Spare ribs with zucchini -- Outstanding. What impressed us was the contrasting texture of the dish. The meat was succulent and came off the bone easily, but the crust was crispy. Mom was impressed with the technique. 4. Savory egg custard with cherrystone clams -- My personal favorite. My mom made a basic version of this dish for us growing up without the clams. The textures and flavors of the egg and clam really worked well together. The whole dish was beautifully presented in a ceramic dish with flames underneath to keep it hot. 5. Shrimp and apple skewer -- very good. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the sweetness of the apple added a nice contrast 6. Pork belly in bao wraps -- My German husband's favorite. The pork belly was perfectly cooked and dressed in a sweet mustard sauce. The most Asian fusion flavor profile on our table. 7. Mini Sesame Balls -- Kid thumbs up. We were too stuffed to eat these, but took them home, where my son devoured them after school. Really memorable meal. The biggest compliment I can give is that we plan to return and bring the whole family. Thank you Chef Cathy and FANG staff.More infoFANGPrice: Moderate• Chinese• SOMA•4.4
