The Best Steakhouse Restaurants in Chicago

Chicago is the towering metropolis of the Midwest, and one of the great cities of the United States. Founded in 1833, it was among the fastest-growing cities in the world for its first 100 years, zooming from under 5,000 people in the 1830s to over 3 million in the 1930s. Slaughterhouses made up an important part of its early industry, which may be one reason why Chicago retains its rep as one of the best steak cities in the country; when it comes to steakhouses, the city brings its A-game. But where are the smartest, savviest diners eating out? Welcome to the Tastemaker 19. We’ve pulled data from thousands of restaurants to pin down the top spots among OpenTable’s most expert, seasoned diners. Impress your friends and family and score a table; we wish we could join you.

Located on North Canal Street, where the Chicago River forks east to Lake Michigan and north to the suburbs, Gibsons Italia is prime real estate offering up prime cuts of meat. One section of its menu is devoted to ”Gibsons USDA Prime Angus,” and the options will not disappoint: filet mignon, New York strip, New York strip bone-in, Chicago cut, and dry-aged double cut porterhouse. Gibsons also lives up to its promise of leading its diners on a “world-class tour of beef.” Witness its “Grassfed Australian” options (“aged for a minimum of 75 days”) of New York strip and bone-in filet mignon, and its Japanese Pure Kobe A5 sirloin, cut to order. No wonder this chophouse has earned a name for serving up perhaps the best steak in Chicago.

Perched atop the Chicago River at the southern end of Chicago’s Near North side, Chicago Cut Steakhouse offers a patio where patrons can relax amid the bustling downtown, and one of the finest steak menus in the city. Here’s a sampling of a few of their options: the Delmonico, the Kansas City strip, the marinated Cajun rib eye, the Colorado double-cut lamb chops, the Iowa pork chop (decked out in sauerkraut, cinnamon applesauce, and pineapple mustard glaze), plus the “Holy Grail,” the bone-in prime rib—considered to belong on the shortlist of the best steaks in Chicago.

Travel up Lake Shore Drive from Navy Pier and turn onto East Walton Place, where Rosebud Steakhouse is tucked under red awnings at the bottom of a multilevel brick building. Some of the star items on the Rosebud Steakhouse's menu include the lamb lollipops, the 8-ounce filet mignon, the ribeye Delmonico, the 24-ounce bone-in ribeye “Butcher’s Cut.“ Rosebud advertises its chops as locally sourced, USDA Prime, and—rightfully so—“the best of the best” of Chicago’s steaks.

A block away from the Chicago Riverwalk, the Palm Chicago is a fine-dining steakhouse in the luxurious Swissotel Chicago. Perhaps because there’s so much foot traffic from the Swissotel, the Palm Chicago is open virtually all day, serving breakfast at 6:30 a.m. and wrapping up dinner around 11 p.m. The standout section on that dinner menu is probably the hand-cut steaks and filets. The Palm serves USDA prime beef that has been “corn-fed, hand-selected and aged a minimum of 35 days,” making them one of the best steaks in Chicago.

STK distinguishes itself from other steakhouses in that its business model is geared toward a female clientele. (Whereas most steakhouses traditionally try to attract men.) Hence the chic lounge decor, the salads, and the raw bar—and the “Small,” “Medium,” and “Large” portion sizes of steaks on the menu, ranging from a 6-ounce filet to a 34-ounce dry-aged tomahawk. Both men and women are welcomed at STK, but whoever decides to come, be ready for a DJ playing the night away as diners drink wine or eat some of the best steaks in Chicago.

The Gibsons Restaurant Group includes such Chicago faves as LUXBAR, Gibsons Italia, Hugo’s Frog Bar & Fish House, and this number, Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse. Dining style: Casual-elegant. Location: Chicago’s Gold Coast. Gibson sources its Black Angus beef from farms in the upper Midwest, and they make sure that the beef has been corn-fed for 120 days and aged for 40 days. Gibson is also “the first restaurant group in the country to be awarded its own USDA Prime Certification.” Translation: These people know how to make one of the best steaks in Chicago.

Some of the finest cuts of beef in the world hail from Japan, so it makes sense that one of the finest steakhouses in Chicago is a Japanese restaurant. Ron of Japan's chefs prepare food in front of diners in the teppanyaki style—a post-World War II method of cuisine in which Japanese chefs cook on a griddle. Hence the “Teppan Entrees”: sirloin, filet mignon, or USDA New York prime steak, all flipped and sizzled before the guests’ eyes.

Ever heard of Alex Dana? He’s the founder of the Rosebud Restaurant Group, which includes Rosebud Steakhouse, Rosebud Prime, and seven more locations that dot the Chicagoland area. Rosebud Prime is a few blocks west of Millenium Park, making it a great lunch option or after-work spot to relax and order a steak—the Firecracker Pork Chop (14 oz), the New York Strip with Herb Butter (15 oz), the Skirt Steak with Grilled Onions and Parmesan Fries (8 oz), and Rosebud’s Signature Bone-In Filet with Wild Mushrooms (16 oz). No wonder people can't get enough of Dana’s restaurants.

A block away from Michigan Avenue, the Capital Grille is set amid the thicket of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The menu features succulent appetizers. (Burrata salad with arugula, prosciutto crisps, and fig balsamic, anyone?) But the dining experience only gets better with the main courses: sliced filet mignon with fig essence, cipollini onions, and wild mushrooms. Twenty ounces of Wagyu beef finished with the Capital Grille’s steak butter. Bone-in, coffee-rubbed, dry-aged New York strip garnished with shallot butter. Need we say more, steak lovers? Book at the Capital Grille today.

“Michael Jordan—who’s that?” said no one ever. Chicago’s most famous athlete founded one of Chicago’s most famous steakhouses, located in the Intercontinental Chicago Hotel on Michigan Avenue. MJ serves up lunch and dinner, including a salad board, oysters on the half shell, the Colossal Crab Cakes, and an assortment of steaks—the Dry-Aged Porterhouse, the Slagel Farms New York Strip, and MJ’s Delmonico (dry-aged for 45 days, and served with ginger-balsamic jus). Slam dunks, all around.

With 25 locations spread across eight states, Shula’s is a popular steak house, and they’ve found a niche in Chicago, as well. Shula’s serves a dinner menu, offering up mostly seafood-themed appetizers (shellfish trio, seared ahi tuna, blackened sea scallops) and salad classics (wedge, caesar, burrata). Not surprisingly, they also block off a section of their menu as the “Shula Cut.” Their 20-ounce Kansas City strip, 22-ounce cowboy ribeye, and 48-ounce porterhouse are all among the best steaks in Chicago.

Perhaps the most famous steak chain in the U.S., Ruth’s Chris can boast of over 100 steakhouses across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The Northbrook, Illinois restaurant is ideally situated to serve the northern suburbs of Chicago. This Ruth’s Chris enjoys a sophisticated clientele and has the menu to match its tastes. The filet, cowboy ribeye, and New York strip are perennial contenders for the best steak in Chicago.

Unlike some steak houses, Jameson’s in Skokie, Illinois, north of downtown Chicago, offers a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, all of which would be hard to turn down—banana waffles in the morning, a patty melt with buffalo wings in the afternoon, and prime sirloin or the London Broil in the evening. The vibe at Jameson’s is casual, the price-point is more than fair, and they serve comfort food that’s readily needed to warm people up through the winter months of the Windy City.

Quick history lesson: Che Guevara (known as “El Che” in the Spanish-speaking world) was from Argentina, home of some of the most prized cattle in the world. True, Che’s style was more revolutionary than restaurateur, but he probably wouldn’t have minded feasting from Executive Chef John Manion’s menu, which takes its inspiration from Argentina’s steak-heavy “asador” traditions. No need to know Spanish to know that “Vacio,” “Lomo,” or “Paradilla” all translate to “one of the best steaks in Chicago.”

Twenty miles west of downtown Chicago is Elmhurt, Illinois, home to 100 South Chop House & Grille. For anyone who's afraid of not getting the quintessential Chicago dining experience so far from downtown, fear not: The western 'burbs are leafy, broad-avenued affairs that feel large-minded yet small-town. They can seem like a picturebook of Americana, where anyone can stop into a steakhouse like South Chop and dine on the New Yorker, the filet mignon, or the Delmonico, all at reasonable prices. Anyone who still can’t resist the siren call of downtown Chicago can jump on the Metro across the street. And for those who prefer life at a slower pace, chat with the bartender over a martini after the meal and then stroll back home down Elmhurt’s elm-bowered lanes.
