Right on the corner of the awesome Meadow at Piedmont Park is a restaurant housed in a gorgeous 1905 stone building. Redolent with history, Park Tavern is an events space, specializing in fundraising, plus a stunning restaurant with a massive focus on environmentalism and conservation. Despite the historical American surroundings, the menu boasts one of the finest sushi selections in town. MF Bar is a slightly more relaxed sister venue to the original MF in Inman Park. Head north out of town towards Alpharetta to discover the same focus on amazing ingredients and flavor. The MF bar is a more casual dining experience, centered around small plates and robata grills. The sushi is still the star of the show, with a huge range of traditional makimono, standard rolls, and house special rolls. Plus, there’s an excellent choice of sake and wine to wash it all down with.

For those Japanese food fans sticking around Alpharetta, there’s the ever-popular Benihana. Benihana is one of those chains that’s remained popular for a reason. That reason is the combination of excellent flavor and excellent service. Although the central experience at Benihana is the communal grill called a Hibachi, talented sushi chefs proudly serve up a range of sushi and sashimi. Grab a sampler combo or create something unique from the extensive menu.

MF sushi is one of those places to go when celebrating something special. This restaurant is possibly one of the most “upmarket” on our list, set in the beautiful neighborhood of Inman Park in sleek surroundings- both inside and out. The Omakase menu here is a real experience, and booking is essential. Guests enjoy many courses highlighting the chef’s expertise, and highly experienced servers recommend beverages to match. Those who prefer to pick their own can enjoy a range of some of the best sushi in Atlanta, including fatty tuna and anago- Japanese eel with sansyo.

For those that don’t take life (or their food) too seriously, The One Sushi + is the place to be. Everything is a little tongue in cheek here. Favorites include Bang Bang Shrimp, Yellowtail Jalapeno Shots, and a roll simply called OMG. However, one thing The One’s team does take seriously is flavor. Look out for touches like spicy aioli, pickles paired with cilantro, or lump crab with just the right amount of truffle. Fun and satisfaction in perfect harmony.

Lots of places have a sushi bar these days, but not everywhere has a 30 foot sushi bar serving up international seafood which is flown in daily. Taki is the crown jewel of the Perimeter Village Shopping Center, and is as popular for a quick lunch as it is for business meetings. The interior is warm and beautiful, and the menu has the same kind of elegance. Signature items include a blueberry sake, Japanese yellowtail with almond and garlic, and salmon with squid ink and avocado. Inventive, and always full of surprises.

All branches of Benihana have the Hibachi, the communal grill that allows for a fun dining experience. But not everyone knows that Benihana also offers a fantastic range of sushi and sashimi, way beyond the standard party platters. The chefs here are expertly trained. Get them to carve their way through Albacore tuna, eel, and octopus. Or, order one of the special rolls such as the Philadelphia with cream cheese or the Sumo- a baked roll with salmon and smelt roe. Perfect for big groups.

There’s no escaping the aquatic theme as soon as guests enter this restaurant. Giant fish appear to swim across one wall, while models of traditional boats nestle into alcoves framed with raw stone. The contrast of stone and steel and white leather reflects the ethos of the menu; beautiful, surprising and above all, satisfying. Vegetable rolls, classic and signature rolls, sashimi, and nigiri all boast the freshest ingredients and fun additions like avocado and quail egg.

O-Ku is a relatively new addition to the Westside Ironworks complex. The restaurant retains some of the industrial-chic ambiance that makes this West Midtown retail hotspot so popular. The original O-Ku was in Charleston, and became a bit hit thanks to the freshest fish combined with a truly innovative take on Japanese cuisine. The Atlanta venue has replicated that ethos perfectly- and the same level of success. Thousands of diners flock here to enjoy some of the best sushi in Atlanta including Black Magic or a Kobi High Five, plus late-night Baja rolls, all washed down with a rooftop cocktail. Booking recommended.

Sushi fans know that great sushi comes from the freshest seafood, so they should find the name of this Buckhead eatery very enticing indeed. Despite Atlanta being a landlocked city, the Fish Market has access to the freshest fish which is flown in daily. Because of this, the menu changes regularly, but there’s always a selection of excellent sushi on offer. Relax into one of the red leather chairs and enjoy flying fish roe, fluke and scallop nigiri or sashimi. Or try specialty maki like the Bangkok which brings salmon, eel sauce and a Thai-style chimichurri together for a flavor sensation. Booking recommended.

Head Downtown to the Twelve Centennial Park Hotel and discover one of the swankiest steak and seafood restaurants in town. This home of juicy steaks and crisp fries might not be the obvious choice for the best sushi in Atlanta, but Catch 12 is up there with the leaders. They offer a separate sushi menu which as well as having the classic sashimi and nigiri options, also offers calamari salads and even a chef’s choice Sushi Boat. Keep an eye out for promotions like the half-price sushi which runs on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.
