Malmaison Brasserie - Edinburgh

This is an attractive restaurant in the heart of Leith, a lovely waterfront suburb of Edinburgh. Our food was acceptable, but service was poor. In addition to indifference from our servers, we were charged for an unordered main dish as well as a 5 pound (unadvertised) charge for bread! Gratuity was added to the bill as well. When asked about these charges, our server told us the restaurant's policy is not to mention the extra charges and wait to see if the customers complained. There are several other better spots for dinner in Leith. If you go here, be sure to review your bill in detail.
Not having much like in Edinburgh recently.
We ordered steaks which were OK, not great, just OK. My wife ordered a chocolate fondant for dessert. Waiter said that the regular chef was off, so it may take longer than usual. Fair enough. 25mins later, he comes back and says he's had to bin the one he made as it was a disaster. Couple of espressos on the house. Fondant eventually arrives - solid in middle. Deleted from bill. Need better chefs. Won't be going back.
Nice setting not to noisy for time of year and staff were great so all in all a good night and will definitely be back
Mediocre. Nothing to write about. Just nice.
food was over priced for the quality given. staff not too attentive. restaurant area was cold. did not feel welcomed.
Another great meal, always great service and fantastic food
We ate on the Chateaubriand, fries and a bottle of wine offer. Enjoyed the steak but there just wasn't enough of it and I know my partner could have eaten it by himself!
Overall, though it was good value and I cannot fault the service we had. from start to finish even on a busy night there.
Their surprise gesture of a decorated dessert plate for our special occasion was much appreciated, too.
We decided to stay at the Malmaison in Edinburgh, it is an excellent hotel of the highest standards. But we was rejected for our evening meal. We booked our table for 8pm via the app and turned up at 7;50 pm when we was informed that there was no table for us. We felt embarrassed and disappointed. We dont really know whose fault this is but it left a sour taste in our mouths. We had a walk to commercial quay and ate at a very good French restaurant who could seat us.
Everything went smoothly, the seating, the table, the ambience. The food was well prepared and served hot. Staff were attentive and friendly and helpful.
Having lunched here many times before, I knew what to expect although I would add that the service was more attentive than I have experienced before. I did go for my usual choice (steak frites) which was as always very enjoyable.
This was our first visit to Malmaison Brasserie and sadly I suspect we won't be hurrying back. While there was nothing specifically wrong with our meal or the experience, we felt that the fairly limited menu was unadventurous, uninspiring and very overpriced. £16 for a fairly standard burger with a bit of salad and fries is way more than we felt it was worth.
Overall very good gazpacho best I have every had Crab was a novel inclusion
Excellent lunch, food good, nice restaurant, great value
The meal was ok but nothing special, the seating can be quite close and a gentleman was seated right next to us despite a relatively quiet restaurant.
Excellent food and excellent service - simple..
My only criticism of the whole visit was the initial reception - we walked into an empty room and stood for at least 5 minutes before any staff appeared. When someone did finally appear, they immediately headed back into the back room / kitchen area, leaving us standing at the front door - at which point I decided to just pick a table and sit ourselves down.
Thankfully the rest of the experience improved, and the service and food was very good thereafter. I will be back as the food is always very good and the location is particularly handy for my work, but I was very tempted to walk out and not come back during the initial 5 minutes this time round.
I have been to the Mal a few different occassions and have been to every location they have in Britain. I wanted to treat a friend to a nice restaurant with good food and great service. I am always in for a treat when I attend any restaurant. The service is grade A and the food is also very good. Having good service and quality food always makes it worth the visit. I have been to other more pricey restaurants but have not returned because the service was slow and uneventful. Keep up the good work Mal!
After viewing the menu's online I decided to book a table and we were not disappointed. The food was beautiful and a lot of thought had gone in to selecting flavours that bode well together. The service could not have been faulted and we would be happy to return again.
Popped in for a business lunch - great food choice, quick service and pleasant environment - not overly busy at all
Fabulous,Sunday brunch,great selection of choice,very high quality of food.Would recommend highly,Def return!!!
A birthday treat and we really enjoyed it. First time we had eaten there and the food, wine and staff all very pleasant and enjoyable. The Sunday lunch deal of 3 courses for just under £20 was good value. Even tho a set meal there was a wide choice and liked the selfservice first course where I had smoked salmon, ceaser salad, coleslaw and lovely rustic bread. My partner had an omlette made by the chef, closely watched by me who's rubbish at doing them. The roast ribeye with all the trimmings was juicy and flavourful and using the attendant chef again, enjoyed that old favourite zingy crepes suzette. The only minor complaint was that it was very hot...maybe just over compensation with the heating system. Would certainly visit again.
Food was amazing, but just expect to pay top rates. Recommended for special occasions.
Excellent food and service. Pity the tables are cramped so closely together.
The 2 starters my boyfriend and i wanted had run out so we had to make other choices. I was torn between which one to go for and took the waitresses advice re the salmon blini - it was excellent. She also brought me a taster of the other starter i had looked at to try it - this was a really nice touch. My burger main was a little overdone but nice all the same and my boyfriend's soup and cajun monkfish were excellent. Staff were really attentive without being overbearing. I would recommend for a special occasion as it is a little pricey but i would definitely go back.
Once again not disappointed in the food or service. Staff attentive without being obstrusive.
I took a client to for a business lunch at Malmaison Ediburgh, the food was great and it is a lovely location just by the water. The menu offers great British food that is lovely at a very reasonable price. If you are nearby I would really recommend taking the time to stop by and enjoy!
Excellent meal at Malmaison Edinburgh on 3 August. Great selection of starters and mains. Went for the prawn cocktail and steak frites then fitted in a Chocolate fondant souffle with milk ice-cream. Food was great, service was quite good and it was really busy.
We were left drinkless for too long, the fire alarm went off halfway through the main course and we were all ushered out for 10 mins, we were then allowed back in but no explenation was given as to the cause, false alarm, or anything regarding the alarm sounding. Needless to say there was no discount, no apology and we paid and made a hasty exit. In future please dont leave diners sat drinkless desperately trying to catch the waiters attention for what should have been a simple and immediately taken order.
The food here was really good, with the exception perhaps of the deserts as both the ice cream brownie sundae and profiteroles were a little disappointing. We all ate from the sunday lunch menu which was very good value with a good range of options. My steak pie was amazing - piping hot, packed full of meat and a rich gravy and served with mustard mash as well as the communal roast potatoes and veg. Good selection of fairly reasonably priced wines by the bottle and glass and even though the place was fairly quiet it had a good atmosphere and the waiter was efficient and friendly.
Beautiful venue and great service. Food was very nice, good portions
We had dinner at Malmaison in Edinburgh, its a great venue and our waitress was really lovely. We had the whitebait which was so light and tasty, then the steak and chip, the steak wasn't as good as I wanted it to be but the chips were fantastic.
Great deal. Lovely surroundings and not too busy for a wednesday night. Intimate restaurant. Staff really friendly if not keen!

Malmaison in Edinburgh offered a good dining experience. Starters of soup, salmon and mushrooms on toast were all very tasty fare. The rump steaks with fries and bearnaise sauce and the chicken and leek pie were equally good but the belly pork with a spoonful of mash proved to be a disappointment not to be reordered. Staff were pleasant and although service for puddings was slow due to a large private group dining they at least advised us of the reason for the delay and apologised .
Food was excellent, a very pleasurable dining experience.
Malmaison Brasserie, Leith.
As always food excellent, service maybe not as good as usual, e.g. mains came to table before starter plates had been cleared. We dined with our son and his girlfriend this time, he was disappointed they seemed to be running out of deserts, first choice not available, second choice only one left (I got that), third choice was good and they did do custard when he asked for it. All in all a good evening and we will be back next time we visit.
Our visit to the Malmaison Brasserie Edinburgh on the 27th august was as expected, the food was excellent , the service was good whilst not being intrusive, we look forward to our next visit.
Malmaison in Leith, Edinburgh is a very impressive eaterie. The food was excellent. There were little touches like a refreshing strawberry granita with the coffee. The wine list was extensive with a decent range of prices. I had a lovely South African Chenin Blanc for £23. They also do an excellent 2 course meal for two with a bottle of wine for £30! Service was efficient and pleasant and the place was immaculate. Not the cheapest place but for a special occasion well worth a visit.
Malmaison Brasserie, Edinburgh overall a pleasant evening friendly welcome from one particular waiter who looked after us very well at the start. Food was tasty and well presented. Service became gradually poorer as the evening progressed with a variety of waiters attending. Had difficulty getting the bill and, once received waited another twenty minutes for the card reader!! When we left we thanked the head waiter at the desk and we were ignored...bizzare!! Restaurant too hot.
Malmaison Brasserie, Edinburgh - lovely ambience, my food was very good, my wife had a few issues, possibly wrong choice, the staff were very friendly, and things got sorted to our satisfaction - I would recommend.
As an impromptu meal for two on a Sunday night, our experience was reasonable. My starter of Squid, razor clam and chorizo was quite small for the price and the while the rump steak was nice a better cut can be had for the same price elsewhere. Service was generally good but the ambience suffered from the same song being repeated for over 3 hours a touch too loudly for quiet Sunday night.
