Midtown Oyster Bar
Our two story building offer 2 bar areas, the first floor tavern and the second floor Burgee Bar. Located right on Thames Street, there is no better place in town to watch the hustle and bustle of downtown Newport. Our tavern area has high top tables for a casual, bar atmosphere, where you can gather with friends to enjoy a great meal, or a few beverages. Three dining rooms and two outside decks allow for plenty of dining space as well as the availability for private parties. Whether you are looking for casual snacks and cocktails with friends or a formal dining experience, Midtown Oyster Bar has everything you could possibly be looking for.
Fun location in the harbor. Food was okay but nothing special. Overpriced like most restaurants in the area. Service was great and the inside is very fun.
Our server, Deidre, was a great guide to Midtown's cuisine and craft cocktails. We had a lot of questions about ingredients and she made sure we enjoyed our meal. We'll be back!
I spoke with the manager about the poor service. She was receptive and responded in kind.
We loved this restaurant! We had a reservation, so we were seated right away. Loved the atmosphere, and the food and drinks were delicious! Highly recommend, we will definitely go back.
We enjoyed everything about our experience at Midtown Oyster. The ambiance was perfect, a good balance between romantic and fun, which is exactly what we were looking for considering it was our wedding anniversary but traveling with a 6 year old and 3 month old. Our waitress was super friendly and helped make our experience one to remember. Ok now the food... amazing!!! Hands down the best meal we had out in a long time.. so good we went back for lunch the next day. We absolutely recommend the octopus and sirloin steak, and of course the oysters were delicious...they were our main reason for going. They have a huge selection and are extremely fresh. We will definitely be coming back on our next trip to Newport!
Service could have been better. Asked her to stagger all the apps. They came out all at once , when we asked her about it she said oh I thought you wanted them all at once. Really never came over to ask how everything was. Food was excellent!! Great oysters, burrata salad, grilled octopus.
We both had the halibut for an entree it was cooked to perfection.
We waited for a table on the deck, was well worth the wait because of the beautiful sunset that we saw.
Came at around 3:30 for a 4:30 pm reservation- was in town for the Newport Boat Show and they had a decent crowd downstairs in the bar area. We opt’d into sitting upstairs were we could feel the air. The upstairs is a tall ceiling room, very bright & had cool flags! We had a server greet us and take our drinks, we also were greeted by an additional waitress. I had the summer sangria, overall opinion on it... it was more of a fall sangria than summer with cinnamon & brown sugar in it. Boyfriend had the tuna poke, says he loves it, best poke bowl. For dinner, I enjoyed the caramelized sea scallops!! Overall.... I’d return!
I was surprised at the large size of this place. I think your dining experience could be quite influenced by where you are seated. We ate an early dinner upstairs outside where it was fairly quiet and calm. There is a large upstairs dining area with a tall ceiling and nautical theme. More seating is downstairs where it’s cozier but less classy. The bar was hopping downstairs when we left around 7:00. We loved our fresh fish entrees. My large portion of swordfish was served on a delicious cauliflower pilaf. Fun, busy, popular place.
Very nice menu, good service, and nice ambience. A good effort is made to present and prepare an inventive and creative menu.
Wonderful evening at Midtown Oyster Bar for a group of 17. Food and service were amazing. Definitely would go again.
We had fried oysters and shared a bowl of oyster stew. Both were delicious. I also had a Guinness and my wife had a class of Chardonnay. It was a light meal that fit the bill.
The lobster Benedict was amazing.
Food and service companies were excellent as always. Noise made it difficult to converse. Hostess didn't give credit for our Open Table points.
Midtown Oyster Bar has become our favorite go to for great food and atmosphere. Always pleases.
Great dining experience!
We three ate at Midtown Oyster Bar for the first time this evening. The service was great! Our waitress Nordia was cheerful and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered oysters, cherry stones on the half shell and lobster rolls. Everything was fresh and tasty. In addition, our martinis, gin tonics and sangria were well mixed and served quickly. We feel we had a great dinner experience. Thanks to the Midtown team!
Farewell dinner before moving my son into URI
Great service at the bar. Raw bar selections excellent!
I’ve been here several times. The food is good as is the service, so I will keep coming back. The chatty noise is more than I like when it’s date night, and not real romantic either so we normally choose the patio. Other than that that its a good safe choice.
We were very disappointed. The service was slow. We ordered the two dishes our server recommended—clam pasta and Mahi Mahi. Both dishes were just okay. The fish was over cooked and bland. Will not return or recommend.
The staff were very friendly and provided great service. The seafood was fresh and delish. We really enjoyed the seating on the rooftop.
Everything was wonderful! The only small problem was the waitress spoke very softly. We could hardly hear her
Dinner was delicious. Our waiter seemed to be overwhelmed with tables as he forgot a lot of our drink orders and other requests. The atmosphere was pretty, we sat outside.
Great for adult family.
First off, I like Midtown and have been there several times. My experience this week was very disappointing. My daughter has a severe nut allergy. We overtly explain this to every waitperson when we go out. On this night I had to mention it several times during dinner. There was little in the way of sensitivity and true awareness to this which was very uncomfortable.
Next, we explained the need to cook a fish dish through to “medium”. It came out seared rare/raw. Also very disappointing. For desert, they mixed up the order and served my daughter (not our waitress but that can’t matter) cake with Nutella (nuts!) on it. Fortunately we knew and switched it off.
These are very serious issues so please train and get your [! ] together...YIKES!
Always a good meal at Midtown whether it be for lunch or dinner. Atmosphere is fun. Menu has a good variety
Very good food and service. Nice outdoor seating My husband Loved the variety of oysters
Enjoyed lunch and dinner. Amazing Oyster selection with a great menu that describes each. Our waitresses were world class. Especially recommend the grilled Octopus. Smart beer and wine selections, too. Bravo!
Great Place with quality food, friendly and quick service with good advice. Price is fine for what you get.
Always a wonderful dining experience. Chef Mitchell never disappoints. Fabulous Raw Bar. The freshest and most innovatated fare. Great staff and Charlie always greets you with a smile. Thank you all.
Terrific menu selection and wait staff was friendly and attentive! Will be back when we are in Newport!
Midtown Oyster never disappointments! This time, we had an 11-year old with us and the bartender went out of his way to make him chocolate milk. The raw bar choices are always fresh. My wife and I just thought our fish dishes (mixed grill + black sea bass) may have been a bit over-grilled. The 11-year old loved his salmon dish.
Excellent seafood and service. Thank you Midtown. We've been in town for 3 days and loved it so much we already visited twice.
Excellent seafood in the heart of Newport. A++++
the Rhode Island style clam chowder (clear broth) is amazing! best in Newport hands down. place is crazy busy in the summer months but you'd never know that in how well you're treated by the staff.
We went here for my daughter's birthday. The hostess gave us options/suggestions as far as seating. We ended up on the deck in shade. Seating and atmosphere was great. Daughter loved the cod chowder (which was unexpected), I had the Sea Bass, Wife had the Monkfish. We cleaned all our plates, everything was perfect. Monkfish was the winner.
Great service from Alli and excellent meal. Awesome raw oysters and fish of the day.
Excellent meal, terrific service!
3 of us dined at Midtown on National Oyster Day (who knew) so we started with oysters. They had a great selection and described them well. We shared 4 varieties. They were terrific. Asked for another lemon wedge which never materialized. The smoked bluefish dip was another great dish we shared. Creamy and smoky , paired with saltines. Yum. Two of us had lobster rolls. They were perfect! Large pieces of slightly buttery lobster on a toasted roll. My mouth is watering just remembering it! Our third diner had scallops which she really enjoyed. They looked seared to perfection. There was live guitar music and we really enjoyed the singer. Our server at first was great, then we got a new one in a shift change who was just mediocre. Overall, great seafood and a fun atmosphere.
Great restaurant in a convenient location!
Really great food, perfect location. Outdoor and indoor seating. Lively bar crowd. Can't go wrong here, one of our favorite spots.
