The rebirth of downtown Greer seems to have attracted some top-notch chefs and rejuvenated the ones who were already here. Local menus offer everything from Thai-style mussels to fried kasseri cheese flambeed with tequila. Longtime soul-food favorites are getting some creative makeovers – sofrito collard greens are shockingly good. Messing with pimiento cheese has never been encouraged in Greer, but even the natives seem inspired by a recent five-cheese variety. Whether you order pan-seared mountain trout or shrimp and grits with redeye gravy, the ingredients are likely to come from nearby farms. Even pizza toppings are delightfully fresh. Outdoor dining and live music go hand in hand with craft moonshine. The classic diners around town still dish up some of the best barbecue, smothered pork chops, and fried catfish in the South, but Greer is also celebrating their food renaissance.
