                                                                                              We hadn't been to Olamaie for quite a while (before the pandemic). The food was fabulous, but it was very, very loud. Also, seems they have upscaled it so much that it was far more expensive than it had been. Although the meal was delicious, I would not recommend it to others because it was so loud you couldn't hear others at your own table AND I don't think it was worth the very high price tag. A drink + app + entree + dessert + wine is well over $125pp. Even the delicious biscuits are $3 a piece, which is a little ridiculous if you want to get one for each person at the table. It didn't used to be that expensive. I had a great meal, but I probably won't go back. Many other great restaurants in Austin for a reasonable price.

                                                                                              I booked this reservation a month in advance to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and She and our close friends were very excited to celebrate here. We had a 7 o’clock dinner reservation and arrived several minutes early so we might enjoy a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. We we told no seats were available at the bar area and was ushered out doors, behind a porch, which appeared to be an alley way paved with bricks with two high topped tables there. We made eye contact with our waiter but he did not acknowledge our party of 4 for another 15 minutes when he brought by room temperature water and took another 15 to return to take out drink orders. It should be noted the ambient air temperature was 89°F. We were able to enjoy the ambiance of a the space with my wife and her friends and were seated promptly at the time of our scheduled reservation. Everyone in my party was looking forward to getting inside from the heat and enjoying the food from the menu we had waited months to experience. Our part was sat in the rear of the dining room next to the kitchen and in close quarters to a loud part of 6, who had no courtesy to allow us to enjoy our meal. We quickly learned it was no cooler inside the restaurant than from the outside l, actually we asked a kitchen worker through a open partition wall how hot it was and he advised 112°F. We were given room temperature water with no ice cube Giving it was very hot and uncomfortable and we along with the heavy smoke from the kitchen made it much more intolerable. From the time we were seated until re had our appetizers was over 40 minutes. The food was amazing. Best Biscuit Ive ever had and the rest of my party was pleased with their selections. The smoke was unbearable and my wife and her friend had to step outside to catch their breath. I did mention I was celebrating my wife’s birthday and no mention of it was made by any of the staff. I was given a $417 check to include $65 service fee for wait staff.

The kitchen had a fire and the whole place got smoky…windows are sealed shut so we were desperate to pay our (hefty) check and get out of there. Food was good but minuscule portions and service was great except for a lack of help to make the customers feel more comfortable after the smokeout.

We went for our anniversary and they left a happy anniversary card at our table and make us complimentary mocktails when they found out we did not drink alcohol. Also appreciate the 20% built in fee to ensure good wages and care for the staff, it showed in our staff interactions and atmosphere.

AC had been out for 3 days and it was over 90 degrees outside when we arrived at the restaurant. Nothing was mentioned by the waiter until we complained about the temperature. We also told him it was our Anniversary and it wasn’t even acknowledged. Expected a better experience for a meal that was $350!

                                                                                              I understand why Alamaie is on every top 10 list for Austin. Parts of what we had were among the best things I've ever eaten. Other bites were mediocre to disappointing. The red rice on the appetizer was among the best things I've ever eaten. The shrimp were simply meh, a bit overcooked and not large enough or fresh and unable to be anything more than a throw away to that rice. The Carolina gold rice with crab was almost as good as the red rice and that could be argued. It was so full of crab and so bursting of flavor and decadently rich. The blackened fish on top was thin and overcooked in the attempt to really sear the outsides so it just wasn't very good. The beef cheeks were oversalted to point of being almost unedible, although everything tilted towards being salty. I was there on a Monday and I think there were some ventilation issues going on in the kitchen. This could have been a less that representative night for them, but I suspect not. It is also very expensive. All in all, the things that were good wre so good I'd encourage people to go at least one time.

Only downsides: limited vodka selection, and some items were a bit overpriced (and others were reasonable).                                                                                               It was our first visit and we were so grateful that our server, Charlie, made wonderful recommendations for each course. Everything was not only beautiful but delicious. We also appreciated the 20% charge for the staff's benefits and living pay. Definitely will be back!
