About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
A cozy full-service restaurant in the heart of Capitol Hill, a short walk from the U.S. Capitol. Chefs Bart Hutchins and Matty DeFranza are in our kitchen, and our talk-of-the-city bar staff can guide you through our exquisite cocktail menu and wine list.

Our well-composed, seasonal French dishes were featured in The Washington Post's spring dining guide for 2025 and have received rave reviews from the New York Times Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and beyond.

Our full cafe and daytime service offers our house blend espresso, a handsome selection of teas, and a separate daytime food menu. There are even a few tables out front on Pennsylvania Avenue, for those who like to watch the world go by.

See you at Butterworth's!

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Butterworth's offers a delightful dining experience with "amazing tallow fries," "the best burgers," and "fabulous Bloody Marys." The ambiance is charming, and the venue's interior design is stunning. However, while the food is "fantastic," service issues and reservation inconsistencies may detract from the overall experience.

Food was great, prices weren’t too bad either. The biggest issue was the attentiveness of our server. We sat done with our food and waiting for a check for nearly 30 minutes and once we received the check it took another 15 to have them pick up my card and get it back to me

Our second time here did not disappoint. Service was attentive, cocktail was adept, food was flavorful, ambience was Victorian. Definitely a keeper!

Honestly, I wanted to love it. However, the bouillabaisse was just average. The sauce was a thin broth devoid of a traditional roux. No bowl was provided to dispose of my seashells and I was forced to stack them high on my bread plate. The burger and tallow fries were good. However, the wine service was atrocious. We still had nearly a glass left in our bottle and the wine steward came and whisked the bottle away and threw it in the trash at the end of the bar. When we mentioned it to the waitress they tried to give us a glass of wine (not the same kind we had originally ordered) then some random dessert we did not want. We just paid the bill and left. We are from out of town and had heard such good things about Butterworth’s. Very Disappointing.

Food and ambiance were lovely but service was uniquely bad. I had made a 7:00pm reservation, but Butterworth’s called the afternoon before to tell me they would not honor it, and asked that I come in at 8:30 instead. When I pushed back, they said that the best they could do was 7:45. Although they kindly sent out champagne and an amuse bouche when we got there, things started to go downhill with our second drink order. It took over 30 minutes to arrive, after we reminded two separate waiters to bring it out. After all that, we were brought the wrong drinks. After correcting that order, we then ordered a third round. This came back with only one of the two drinks we ordered, which was once again, the wrong drink. This time, we didn’t bother to try to get the correct drinks. When we got the bill (which was also incorrect), I tried to mention the problem with our third round to the waiter, but he interrupted me to blame the trainees without taking any responsibility or offering an apology. I hope butterworth’s sorts out its service problems.

The tallow fries were amazing!! We had burgers, shrimp/grits, olives, and it was all good. The reservation process was a bit off. I tried to add 2 people to my party if 6 but it wouldn’t let me . When we arrived the place was almost empty and we couldn’t figure have had other friends join us. But we had a great time and drinks were good.

I booked a table at Butterworth's for lunch on a Tuesday (not a holiday). We were Brits travelling to DC as tourists and thought it would fun to support a compatriot. How wrong we were!! Having booked online, I confirmed the table 24 hours prior (requested by the restaurant) and then turned up to find it totally closed. DC is not an easy place to just 'walk' to a new restaurant, so it ate up a lot of time travelling to somewhere else. I've never witnessed anything like this before. Absolutely terrible!
