I am a huge fan of Contramar! It was my second visit in two weeks, and I could eat there every day! If you like fish, this is the spot in México City. It’s in the Roma neighborhood. The fish is super-fresh and delicious, and the service is first-rate. The whole fish served at the table is always delicious, and the Scallop Aguachile is amazing.
And save room for dessert, because you have to have some! It is a comfortable and welcome restaurant with the freshest fish in Mexico City!!

We were really looking forward to our dinner at Contramar, but unfortunately, were very disappointed. While the food was tasty, we felt rushed by staff looking to turn over tables as quickly as possible. The noise level made it very difficult to have any conversation. Overall, far too expensive for the quality and atmosphere - you can get much better food at a lower price point at one of the other great restaurants in CDMX.

Si, lo recomendamos, pero con advertencias...

Llegamos a Contramar a las seis de la tarde, y por eso, nos sentimos apresurados (no sabiamos que el restauran cierra a las seis y media). Los camareros no nos ayudaron mucho en entender el menu ni en explicar las especialidades del sitio. En cuanto a la comida, nos gusto mucho las tostadas del pulpo pero los dos platos de pescado que comimos no eran nada especial, a la comida en general no valio los $1600 que pagamos. Ahora que sabemos mas, creo que podriamos gozar mas una visita a Contramar, pero tenemos que decir que nuestra experiencia no era tan satisfecha.

Mexico City is full of great restaurants, but Contramar is a stand-out! It’s tremendous! Everything was so fresh and delicious! It was hard to figure out what to order because we wanted to try everything!! With wonderful service. Loved loved LOVED it!!

Our favorite restaurant in Mexico City. Great fresh food (rounds of aguachiles, sopes and tostadas), soft shell crabs, - do not pass on the fig tart, great drinks, friendly and comfortable, fast (sometimes almost too fast) service. A little expensive but worth it.

Always love it there. the food never fails. Pure yum. Leonilo was our server and was wonderful. 1st time for my family. They loved it. Excellent food and people that work there.

Contramar never disappoints. The Tuna tostadas and the aguachile are just amazing. The tacos the pescado al pastor were also good but not quite on the same level.
It’s a place that always feels a bit special yet very relaxed.
Only issue is that they pack it too full. You can barely squeeze through all the tables.
Despite the amount of people though the service is still very good.

Food and service were phenomenal! Tuna tostadas on the house, margaritas, chili relleno with cream and pomegranate, and ceviche were stellar. Even the kids fish sticks, fries, and tartar sauce was unreal good! But the desserts! THE DESSERTS!! Try everything! Buen Prevecho!

I'm disappointed that I am giving this place a poor review. I was so excited to surprise my partner for our anniversary. We alerted the waiter (2 of them) that my partner has a severe soy allergy. They said that we were good with what we ordered to share - scrambled eggs, patatas, and Serrano ham for an appetizer, scallops, shrimp chicharon, tacos with fried Kingfish, cabbage and pickles and spicy shrimp broth. When the appetizer came out it looked very oily and we decided to make sure that it wasn't made with soybean oil/vegetable oil. It was. They use vegetable oil in all their fried foods and I was surprised it was used for the scallops and shrimp too. We had to change his order and he got jumbo shrimp and a bland seared tuna steak with a bland side of steamed vegetables. They brought aioli with the jumbo shrimp which we asked about only to find out it had vegetable oil so he had to eat bland jumbo shrimp. His tuna steak entree came with black beans and the waiter said they had vegetable oil but still offered them to my partner in case he wanted to eat them??!!

The fish tacos were so bland I only ate one of the three.

The most troubling part of this experience is that he ate the pickled side that came with the bread, salsa Verde, and limes also had soybean (vegetable oil). We were presented with these after we alerted them about the soy allergy when we first sat down to eat. We are really hoping he doesn't get sick.

A very bland, disappointing, and poor experience.

My friends and I were struck by Montezuma's revenge after dining here. (We had eaten separate meals earlier in the day, but shared food at Contramar.)

Overall quite tasty (esp the tuna tostada), but not worth losing a vacation day.

It's...fine. The thing is, there are so many seafood restaurants in CDMX that provide better value, or are in a more comfortable space, or have a more provocative menu that it's hard to justify shelling out for Contramar. We had the tuna tostada (good but straightforward,) the crab rollos (a bit doughy and not enough crab,) and the signature whole fish (the standout, really well cooked) with 2 drinks and it was nearly $100 US.

It's a bit of a scene, but coming from NYC that's more of a negative than a draw. Seek out smaller neighborhood restaurants and you won't be disappointed.

We went to Contramar for my husband's birthday as a couple based on reviews online and friends.
It was everything we had hoped for. I had requested a table with a view of the street on OPEN TABLE which they had ready for us when we came in. I had also requested a candle in a dessert. Without a reminder, the wonderful staff brought that out as well. The service is quite different in that ALL waiters serve ALL tables, and thus whatever a table needs, a waiter immediately responds.
We had shrimp ceviche (picante due to peppers which can be removed) and shrimp aguachiles--perfect picante for a gringa. When said gringa ate a pepper off hubby's plate, three wait staff attended us immediately with remedies for the heat--the final offering was a plate of course sea salt which I put on my tongue that did the trick! The pasta with seafood was amazing. And all the dishes around us looked delicious. Don't fill up on the great bread!!! The margarita was the best EVER!
Our dessert was a chocolate gelato which was amazing!
Thank you all for a wonderful birthday celebration!

The aguachiles were some of the best I've ever had. Also don't miss the tuna tostada. Super fresh, great atmosphere, delicious whole grilled fish. Will definitely return on next trip to Mexico City!

I liked Contramar a lot Food and service where great. Also, the place is beautiful. 2 things I'd pointed out: it felt a little too noisy (but ok, because we went at noon) but I felt the prices were too high. Quality of the food was excellent, but really felt too expensive.

Contramar was fabulous! The food was fresh and delicious and the service was amazing—attentive but not annoying. We also dined at Pujol—eat at Contramar instead—the food is equally delicious and it’s a much better atmosphere and value. Well done!

Wonderful restaurant, was very loud but we were able to sit outside. I felt the service was great but rushed. Im not sure because the waiters were being forced to turn over tables or if thats the norm.
