   What a place. Unbelievably affordable, high quality food served by the nicest and most passionate people. An amazing wine list that can be accompanied by a range of small sharing plates. The open style kitchen means you can smell the food being prepared and cooked as soon you walk in. The staff are the friendliest bunch of guys and we’re so happy to have to such an fantastic place like this in the centre of Manchester. The Dexter beef short rib was the star of the show for us all. It completely melted off the bone as soon as it was touched. The dover sole was also beautifully cooked and tasted as fresh as can be. Would highly recommended to anyone looking for a michelin quality meal for a fraction of the price. I’d also recommend people check out Flawd in Ancoats, which is run by the same guys and also serves a similar array of small plates. 11/10

   We had the chefs pick menu which wasn’t worth the money. There was only 1 course with any meat or fish on it which was 1 tiny thin slice of beef per person. Lots of cheese on top of other courses and one of the dishes was just bread and butter. Despite there being 3 options for dessert, could not swap the one in the chefs pick for another when one guest did not like the one included. Overall i think it’s overpriced for what it is. Much better value for money at similar style restaurants in Manchester

   An incredible evening!! The staff were super friendly and welcoming and the food was outstanding. We went for the chefs menu and every course was of such high quality. The whole place felt really homely but the food and wine was that of what you would expect in a super high end restaurant. You can tell that everyone puts their heart and soul into everything there.    The dishes were lovely but very rich/seasoned; with small plates jus very hard to know a good balance without being advised. I think a few more light cool & juicy dishes would have made this a better meal - it’s really down to choice and it’s very difficult to know how rich something will be. The Jane’s beef was lovely and tender, but had very little flavour, and the sole was lovely but incredibly salty. Oysters and bread were great, brocolli nice but quite oily, fritters lovely but rich again. Gem lettuce nice and crisp but very heavy rich topping.

    Richard, Dan and Joe give outstanding service and helped us choose each dish and wine to perfection. The food is incredible - cheese tart is a MUST and the mussels were the best we’ve ever had. Overall would go back over and over again. They were also very accommodating to our 4 year old son. 10/10!!!!!!

    I overall enjoyed Higher Ground, service was excellent, the food was good but no wow dishes. My table mate had been before and found the food more punchy with flavour on previous visit. I would defo go again though. Wine stunning!

    Came for a birthday dinner with my partner. Due to ongoing health problems I'm speech impaired so had mentioned this when booking. The care given by the staff was exemplary. They rang me during the week and suggested some solutions. On the night they had two tables we could choose, one of which was in their wine cellar room. Clearly not where they normally would seat diners but such a brilliant solution. Very grateful to them for enabling me to still be able to communicate with my partner and enjoy my night. And enjoyed looking at all the wonderful wines they stock. We picked an Austrian rose wine which was sublime. Food was amazing, although a couple of dishes were a bit too salty for my palate. Overall had a great evening thanks to the wonderful staff at Higher Ground making my night special.

    We had the most wonderful meal at Higher Ground. The staff were lovely, super friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the chef’s choice which was incredibly tasty and beautifully presented. It was good to see that others who also did this had alternative selections so keeping the menu interesting. Can’t wait to come again!

    Joe's cooking is always a joy to try. Simple and unpretentious, but always interesting! Will be back again on special occasions to treat myself. Service was also friendly and very good. Any questions were answered by front of house and the chefs too

    We were very disappointed with our meal at Higher Ground. We had the chef's choice. The first course of pea fritters was pretty good with little pillows of pea covered with cheese. It was downhill from there. My wife watched as the guy at the pass randomly threw half a kilo of salt on her potato salad. She couldn't eat it. Fortunately he missed my plate. The fermented beetroot was ok, but a bit bland and the nutty seeds on top rescued it from complete absence of flavour. The home made pasta with pesto was dense solid stodge covered with tasteless underseasoned green goo. The main course was awful. A bland 4mm thick slice of pork was at least soft and well cooked but didn't taste of anything. It was served with a gloopy gruel containing undercooked hard (not al dente) grains. There were also bitter leaves coated in a really astringently sour and unpleasant dressing. Dessert was a rock hard frozen yoghurt with sorrel gremolata. We argued over whether it tasted of grass or weeds. It had a palate cleansing sort of quality but is didn't deserve to be called a dessert and we left most of it. Overall the meal did not deliver flavour. Nothing was delicious. The few things that did taste of something were challenging rather than yummy. Service was ok, we didn't have to wait long for anything. I had orange wine for the first time which was ok but not life changing. The one positive note is that at least the portions were decent and there were plenty of carbs on offer so we didn't leave hungry. Having said that, as we walked back through Chinatown the delicious smells made us wish we had gone elsewhere.

    Brand new restaurant. Really nice location with open kitchen and minimalist and modern design furniture. Professional and kind service. The menu offers a selected list of starters and mains; some of the starters are quite “eccentric”, combining flavours that sometimes not fully match. Strongly recommend are starters with few ingredients (oysters are super delicious). Main courses are excellent: pollock was perfectly cooked and the side of peas and chive was good as well; also very tasty was the pork fillet, rare cooked, with its super crunchy skin (side of broccoli and spelt porridge was good too). Finally, very tasty was the dessert: cane sugar ice cream was great! Excellent wine selection. The bill was a bit expensive (about 75£ per person), but it was totally worth it!

    Service was amazing. All staff looked delighted to be there and excited to serve you. They had an extensive understanding of the wine and food menu and were able to answer any questions we had. The food was phenomenal. We decided to go for the chef’s selection and were so glad we did. I don’t think I would have chosen anything that we were given from the menu but I’d definitely re-order it all now. Everything was 10/10.

    Really wanted to give this place more stars as the venue was great and service was amazing. In isolation the food was all good but all of it was so so salty there was no restbite or balance with the over all meal. Even the veg was so salty could of done with more freshness and acidity to cut through

    My friend and I had an amazing lunch at Higher Ground! Had the surprise set price lunch which I highly recommend! The soup and the pork and mash were so scrummy!! Pudding was my fave to rhubarb and custard! Richard was so welcoming given we were late .. it was chucking it and we’d got rather lost! The service was fabulous all the way through. Another guy who was American was really friendly too! Best eaterie in Manchester and I do eat out a lot!! Thanks Richard! Olwen :-)

    Lovely and imaginative small plates to share, friendly and attentive service with interesting wine list. Not many non-alcoholic options on the drinks list. Sat at the bar and we were served several of our dishes by the chefs which was a nice touch. Visited on a week day night and it was full by the time we left. Music could be a touch loud if you were in a larger group but perfect if only a couple.
