We were visitors from out of town enjoying the holidays in Santa Fe. The La Fonda is a lovely hotel and we were expecting a really nice buffet/holiday experience on Christmas Day. The service was average, the food was average, and the overall experience was not what we had hoped. Our experience certainly did not reflect what we paid to be there. We would not recommend the buffet - perhaps the regular restaurant would be better.

We chose LaFonda for Christmas dinner — and wish we’d gone elsewhere. The food and service were mediocre — certainly not worth the $200-plus charge. I was offended by the built-in 22 percent service charge. A diner should be the one to decide the gratuity, if one is warranted. The hostess was borderline rude. At no point were we welcomed. Rather she acted like we were bothering her. To make matters worse, as we were leaving we overheard the hostess and another staffer (perhaps a manager) discussing (ridiculing) other guests. LaFonda had changed, and not for the better, unfortunately.

Had to wait to be seated. There was no prime rib or ham as advertised. Carrots and green beans were undercooked and not hot. We had to search for our waiter when we needed anything. On the positive side, the mashed potatoes and deserts were good. And the buffet lines moved smoothly.

Christmas Buffet: Food and selection were outstanding! Of special mention: the green beans with warm bacon dressing and cranberries were out of this world, and new to both of us. Prime rib, roast lamb and salmon were all delicious entrees. Salad bar was incredible; a meal in itself. Desserts were delicious, but the plates were incredibly small-about 2 x 2 inches, so it was difficult to put even one item in the dessert plate. Overall a memorable experience for a special day!

The buffet in Lumpkins Ballroom was one of the best I've had. The service was great and the atmosphere was festive. We enjoyed the buffet selections on both the main and dessert tables. I would only suggest some direction placards for diners. With 2 sets of tables set in a square, some diners were going against the tide despite directions from the servers.

Do not use Open Table for reservations for this restaurant. I was charged a cancellation fee of $60 after spending almost $400 for a lunch that I didn’t cancel. Server was awesome and food was pretty good. Will never do this again though.

There were only 2 main course options, prime rib and salmon. The 2025 Christmas menu stated that there would be three. There was supposed to be roasted chestnut dressing, but there was some awful creamy polenta. There were garlic carrots and garlic potatoes. Maybe less garlic would have been nice. The wait staff gathered by our table for long periods of time engaged in private conversations, which was extremely annoying.. The desserts were the only saving grace to an otherwise lackluster buffet. However, the most deplorable thing was when the manager was taking a photo of the young Native American gentleman who was carving the prime rib, and he made a friendly gesture, the manager said, "that wasn't a gang gesture was it?" The guy relplied back very courteously, ' I don't know any of those gestures.' The manager laughed it off saying "what do I know, I am just a white guy from Wyoming." Unbelievable!

As far as Buffetts go, it was just Okay….nothing special. The food was tasty and the servers/staff overall were very polite/friendly but, I did get in trouble with the Head-Chef when I was standing by the cheese tray and I asked him if they had crackers for the various cheese spreads (I thought they went together…guess not) and he was a little irritated with the request but, he made it clear they had no crackers but, they did have rolls at the other table. As for the dessert table, I thought it was a little weak for the price we paid for two(2) with one(1) drink ea. and mandatory service fee ($265) and where was the chocolate Desserts…..Been here, tried it….no need to go back.
