John Anthony Cantonese Grill & Dim Sum is a modern Cantonese restaurant, named after the first Chinese man to be naturalized as a British citizen in 1805, inspired by his journey along the Spice Routes from East to West. In the kitchen, Chef Wong Chi Ming puts an inimitable spin on Cantonese classics such as handmade dim sum, roasted meats, and live seafood dishes using progressive cooking techniques. John Anthony is also home to one of Hanoi’s first ever Wood Stone Duck Ovens, installed to prepare the signature 42-day Roasted Peking Duck.

A beverage program curated to complement the cuisine features gin cocktails, locally brewed beer and the hotel’s extensive wine selection. John Anthony Hanoi is also a champion of sustainable practices in the restaurant industry, using upcycled materials and working with local producers and suppliers.

Disappointing. Second time at John Anthony. Hoping this bad experience was an isolated one. Reading the other reviews, though, I am not sure. Our issues are: 1. Disorder. Food was ordered and came 20-25 minutes later, but in "stages." The whole meal lasted two hours because it seems as though each part of our order was spaced out. For instance, one of my group got their meal, while another had to wait ten (10) minutes for theirs. 2. Heat of Food. None of the "hot" foods were served hot, at best they were lukewarm. 3. Noise. There was a family party they plopped right in the middle of the restaurant. Children were running around screaming and crying. When they were not, they were on their smart devices watching videos w/ the volume quite loud and annoying. 4. Confusion. Not clear who was in charge of the table. Who were servers? bussers? carriers? Given the price paid, I would not return or recommend.

This is the 2nd year that my wife & I celebrate our anniversary in John Anthony I will say overall the meal was “Fair” (and in this rating system “Fair” is 2 stars) BUT item #1504 Steamed (Shrimp) dumpling with salmon role is TOTAL RIP-OFF in my opinion I have had read the menu before, and knows that the dim-sum at night in John Anthony isn’t cheap When I paid the bill, it was around VND 1 million more expensive than the bill last year (VND 3.5 million in total. I remember last year was around VND2.5mil) After we were home, after looking into the bill clearly, I then realize that the 3 pieces of shrimp itself costs more than VND1.1mil !!! --- and so 1 salad, 2 bowls of soups, a dish of roasted duck, a dish of vegetable & a crab noodle costs ONLY VND2.4mil (equivalent to around 6 pieces of stupid dumpling!) First of all, I am willing to take at least 51% of responsibility for this incident (the rest will be born by the one who design the menu and setting such ridiculous price) Look at item #1502 & 1503, dumplings with sea cucumber & siew mai with baby abalone How can shrimp dumpling with salmon eggs (same salmon eggs on AEON Mall sushi) be 3 times as expensive as sea cucumber & baby abalone? How can 3 pieces of shrimp dumplings give more value (and costs more) than item #1106 a whole chicken with mini abalone??? Again, I will take at least 51% of responsibility --- but I can’t help feeling being ripped-off on our anniversary dinner Should we come back next year? Or should we visit Inter-Continental Landmark 72 before considering coming back? I can support all of my opinion below with photos

Overall, I was very happy, but I would like to make a few comments. 1. 1. The air conditioner was turned on for a while, and the cold air from above hit the food, and the food cooled quickly. After that, I asked him to weaken it and improved it. 2. There were many loud Vietnamese toasts from customers across the wall. 3. I ordered a Peking duck and set aside the skin in front of us, but the meat was scarce. After that, the meat part was taken away to the kitchen and did not come out as another extra dish.

The hotel that John Anthony is in was chaotic at best on that night. The restaurant was exceellent, the food was excellent. All aspects of service and atmosphere were excellent. The booking was for 8pm and had to wait til 8.30pm to order, although we were seated as soon as we got there. Other than that, all i can say is excellent.

Compared to other Crystal that I frequent in Singapore and Hong Kong, this one in Hanoi fell short. The Peking duck is pre-cook which is not good, then they ran out of sea cucumber and the roast pork, which is a Crystal Palace special was not available even after my order was taken.

The staff is excellent, very attentive and kind. We asked for a table next to the window. However, we had to change it as we were put next to another big, noisy table. The staff was very accommodating but they should have thought about it before maybe. Also, the food was good but not excellent. Although the pork belly was excellent. Of course, prices are extremely high.

This is an expensive restaurant in a 5-star hotel, so I expect very professional service level. My business partner ordered scallop with asparagus. The attendant after a few minutes checking with kitchen, told her that "sorry we don't have enough scallop to make the dish". 10 mins later she told us "we have enough scallop now". Another dish that we ordered was "dim sum with caviar". It came without caviar. We had to remind the attendant and he added the caviar on top. We ordered 2 beers. one came. we had to remind them for the second one. Overall, food quality was alright, as expected for such restaurant. Service level was poor.
