Kobo is the workshop for Hatted Chef, Jacob Lee, a space for him to demonstrate his love for his homeland of Korea, re-engineering regional dishes onto a contemporary platform, incorporating Japanese and Australian influences for a dining experience like no other.

A solid marble chef’s table is front and centre, seating 8 guests at a time for an intimate chef's table (meaning “I leave it up to you.”), Chef Jacob breaks the menu down into “Episodes” with each episode featuring a core focus on a culinary moment of his life.

Kobo is located in Sydney's new Quay Quarter Lanes, a short walk from Circular Quay station, nestled just behind the historic Hinchcliffe House.

Absolutely amazing. I went with my family and the course was thoroughly enjoyable for all of us. We loved listening to Chef Jacob sharing the episodes behind his meals and Mr Sommelier explaining the reason behind the pairing. We are Korean so was half-expecting the flavours but Chef Jacob's little tweaks were ingenious that each meal left us surprised and nodding with huge approval. My dad said Kobo is the best restaurant he's been to in Australia (he normally doesn't like eating out, so it is a huge Tick!) Not only was each dish beautiful and well thought out and executed, we loved the ambience and the interaction we could have throughout the dining experience. We were very lucky to have had a very sweet couple dine with us, who elevated the interaction. Overall, I don't regret taking my whole family and I look forward to going back for the new season - if I can get a booking that is :)

Jacod and his team kept the service very initimate by conversing with each guest and explaining why he chose each dish and it brought back memories of his time in korea with his family. The food was exquisite, stand out dishes were the rice cake with gamtae butter, the dumpling and the wagyu beef soup!

Authentic, yet contemporary cuisine. This is heritage Korean identity & flavours experienced with each mouthful of each dish, whilst Jacob also recounts his inspirations for how the dishes came to be! My partner and I were lucky enough to experience Episode 2: Winter in Korea. It is about time Sydney welcomes Korean fine dining to the food scene - with only just 2 other restaurants that I could think of that could be considered in the same category. However, one clear factor sets Kobo apart, authenticity - from rice cake, pollack soup, galbi beef, roasted sweet potato, sikhye, to name a handful. There is no other restaurant like this, and would very much recommend everyone to try. The only other Korean fine dining restaurant that we tried was actually in Singapore, a restaurant that my partner and I agree to closely resemble the vision that Jacob is seeking to achieve at Kobo, Sydney. This restaurant is called Nae:um, which only recently became 1 Michelin star - I don’t see why Jacob wouldn’t be able to achieve this and congratulate him and his team on the success so far, wishing Kobo even greater success and reaching for greater highs in the years to come! Have marked in my calendar already for when to look out for Episode 3: Night Life in Korea!

Kobo is a real OMAKASE experience and really exceeded my expectations. Chef Jacob explained every dishes well and told stories about his inspiration & reinterpretation behind his creations in which making the whole experience even more worthwhile. Food was excellent and portions were great. There are some room for improvement in term of service but it’s not a big concern. Will definitely revisit again soon. Strongly recommended to experience Kobo yourself.

Chef Jacob Lee has prepared fine dining omakase-style dishes with a traditional Korean base and sometimes with Japanese and/or Western finishing techniques.

Sydney’s first Korean omakase was a delight, even as a solo diner. Each plate was given a story and it was lovely to see how Korean food was represented. Loved and enjoyed every plate. Can’t wait to return for episode which runs for 3 months each.

This is a welcome addition to the upscale dining scene in Sydney. It’s very special to have only 8 diners at a table and interact directly with the chef. The balance of familiar Korean flavours and new concepts was a great pairing. I look forward to seeing how Chef Lee grows with his space as I can only imagine it will get even better with time. Terry Durack is just wrong on this one; the jeungpyeon with kombu butter is anything but forced…it’s delicious and on point for the experience.

Wonderful, new, and exciting omakase-style restaurant exploring Korean flavors. Very intimate experience as one would hope and expect given the size and style of the restaurant. You can tell how much thought the chef has been into each course because he’s right there to tell you all about it! Standout dishes were kingfish in a green mandarin sauce, an intricate wagyu and sea urchin bite, and a phenomenal pork main (bossam) that melted in the mouth. The menu is expected to change every few months, making for a new experience each time, focusing on specific ingredients and themes. Ours (“Episode 001”) was themed after Jeju island, focusing on delicious seafood, pork and a healthy dose of green mandarin across 12 courses. You’ll be in good hands leaving it to Chef Lee and his staff. Obviously not a cheap meal, but given the intricacies, ingredients involved, number of courses (including a generously sized main) it is a good value and worth every penny. Soju, Sake and Japanese whisky (as well as other wine and a few scotches) selection was solid as well. When one after dinner whisky choice was out of stock, they were quick to recommend a delicious alternative.
