Set in the heart of Soho, L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest and most renowned French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites. L'Escargot is now under the ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants and member's clubs. James Tyrrell is now the Head Chef and his dishes celebrate classic french cooking with a modern and healthy twist. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list. We are delighted to say that we are dog friendly.

London Restaurant Festival: 3 courses & glass of Laurent-Perrier £65

In 1896 M. Georges Gaudin established a restaurant at the bottom end of Greek Street called Le Bienvenue. He became famous for his snails and was the first restaurant in England to serve the great delicacy. When in 1927 he moved to larger premises at 48 Greek Street, his customers implored him to rename his restaurant L’Escargot after his most popular dish. He surrendered to them and called the new restaurant L’Escargot Bienvenue.

The courgette flower as a starter was delicious. The pistachio souffle was trully amazing.

Great Prix Fixe pre-theatre menu. Very good food. It took a while to get a bottle of wine, other than that, glad I tried L’Escargot. Will definitely be back.

We came here for our anniversary with the in laws to show them where we got engaged.

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the waiting staff are very friendly. I gave the service a 4 because I didn't find them as engaging as previous visits and we were served by multiple waiting staff. Previously we have had a dedicated waiter which I prefer.

The food was exceptional as always, and whilst quite expensive, worth the money.

Me and my Faster in law ordered French Onion Soup which was moorish and rich. My Wife and Mother in law had the snails which aren't really my cup of tea but they loved them.

For the mains, three of us had fillet steak with truffles and foie gras with dauphinoise potatoes and truffle mash. Absolutely delicious.

We had the souffle option for dessert with pistachio ice cream which ended an amazing dinner. All washed down with some nice French wine.

Always a pleasure dining here.

The otherwise good meal was somewhat spoiled by the fact that my son in law had to send back his guinea fowl for further cooking. When it was brought back, he still found it inedible. This is a man who is not normally prone to making a fuss, and who eats rather a lot. The restaurant deleted the item from our otherwise rather costly bill - without a murmur.

Really enjoyed a return visit to L'Escargot after an extended period of absence (circa 30 years!). The OpenTable deal was great value for money, but the quality of the food was fantastic. Attentive and friendly service and a nice touch that they acknowledged the birthday in the party. Shall certainly return, as all my guests really enjoyed their evening.

We've eaten at L'Escargot a number of times and it has always been a wonderful experience. It hits just the right balance between sophistication and informality. If in season, the grouse is especially good.

Great meal and after a little hiccup on the snails it was rectified and they were gorgeous. The snailegroni cocktail was very tasty and packed a punch. Great service and perfect level of attentiveness. Food was excellent with some real classics and really enjoyed our time there. Will definitely be back.

First rate lobster bisque to begin which was almost a meal in itself was followed by an excellent
tournedos Rossini. The desserts were something of an anti-climax after this, probably because
we were full. The selected wine was better than I was expecting. We used to visit here some
years ago but felt that the level of cooking had declined: that is no longer the case!

This restaurant has always been in my consciousness and I don’t know why it has taken me so many years to pay it a visit - the experience was all I could have hoped for. Each course, from the glorious snails, worthy of the legendary status, the fabulous fish dishes and the sumptuous soufflé, I could tell that everything had been prepared with care - it was pure joy. The prices are reasonable, with a wine list to suit all tastes.

It is trading on past glories to some extent that said, the snails for which they are famous are still outstanding! In trying to capture the increasingly challenging lunch and weekday trade, they have a hybrid of menus and dishes and price points from £8.00 to £60.00 (Chateaubriand for 2), but it has diluted the special feel of the place.

Second time I have eaten there this year though, so I obviously enjoyed it enough to want to go back and overall was not disappointed, but there is better value for money out there in London now.

First experience form, second for my partner who had not visited the restaurant for 40 years. The starters were very nice, and I very much liked the foie gras, followed by the excellent bouillabaisse. The wine list was great, with prices that were most reasonable.

In a very quiet restaurant with many empty tables we were given a table right next to three business men having a business meeting.
For the first course I ordered I was brought something different and asked if I wanted it instead of the correct order. That's very lazy service.
The second course, the roast halibut, was a nicely cooked piece of fish. I could have done it myself at home. I expect more than that in a good quality restaurant. The desert course was pleasant but unexceptional. The service was friendly.

A very pleasant dining area, with tables well spaced providing a degree of intimacy. The service was quietly discreet and efficient. Our choices really hit the spot for both of us. Everything was well presented, and well executed. Excellent flavours and sufficient portions. It was nice to find reasonable quality wine available by the glass.
Overall a very good experience which we will repeat.

Wonderful old French ambience, tables well separated, excellent, charming and very professional service. The Chateaubriand on offer was lovely on previous visits, but this time the confit was not very exciting, and with the traditional veal stock, a little too greasy and heavy. We remarked beforehand how often traditional French cooking often falls down on the main course, and this was a good example. I think the modern palate needs something more acidic or citrus? But the lobster bisque and the chicken liver parfait were excellent starters.
Much to be recommended and I will certainly go again soon.
