   One of the best restaurants in PV, great innovative food and great service! We started with an amazing cocktail, the mixologist was very skilled. I had the 7 course tasting meal and my partner order a la carte, perfect combo. The service was impeccable and great vibe/ ambience. Also, the chef is female, which as a woman was nice to see.

   We have eaten here multiple times and always enjoy it. We typically do the 7-course tasting menu as it rotates and it allows us to try new things. The courses have all been wonderful in their own right as well as a nice flow. This is a cozy place, but tables are adequately separated. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Wine list focuses on Mexico and is sufficiently varied. Prices are at the higher end for Puerto Vallarta. About the same as you might expect in small US cities, less than a comparable restaurant in a major metro area. We always recommend to people coming to PV.

   We "discovered" Makal last year, and returned for a reprise. We were not disappointed. The food is consistently innovative and exceptional. The service is attentive but not obtrusive. The wine pairings are, as well, exceptional. Not a "low cost" option by any measure, but a very special meal for a special occasion.

   The BEST tasting menu in PVR. Hands down. Why? Read on: FOOD This place specializes on Mexican food, but elevates it to the next level. We have tried the 10 course, including great appetizers starting with freshly baked bread, followed by a mushroom tostada, and mahi mahi beets tartar, and a chicharron arancino! Woah! That is not it! We had after a zucchini grill with some of the most interesting mole, made out of pistachio. Then, followed by an al pastor taco on the tortilla made in house! Next come the main courses with the local catch of the day, an octopus, paired with mole and succulent. Then, my fave of the night, oxtail, soft and punchy with flavor. Just gorgeous! Finally, desert with milk pudding, a churro, and a brownie with a marshmallow on top. All of this, is paired with local Mexican wines, allowing you to try interesting dishes from Mexico with the best ingredients out there. This was my #1 dinner in PVR. SERVICE Antonio and Carla were amazing. Please ask for them and they will make sure to take care of you! Thank you!

   What a delightful experience! Located in the heart of the "Zona Romantico", this little restaurant was full of wonderful surprises! For the adventurous (and hungry) epicurean you can explore either the fixed 10 course or 7 course menus or ask for the allacarte menu and pick and choose. The Chefs are true artisans and the food comes to you in fashionable presentation and full of unique combinations of flavors. It is fun to watch them prepare their "art" in public view. The service staff are very friendly and the true mixologist tending the bar are very innovative and entertaining. Don't come here if you are in rush as it will spoil a good portion of the experience.

    The food was delicious, drinks were great, and the staff was extremely welcoming. They also had a great feature on the tables with a small shelf that extends out of your table is needing a little more room with beverages (although the tables aren’t small anyway). Celebrated my birthday here and it was truly a great surprise on how they celebrated. Don’t want to spoil it, but really cute.

    This is the 3rd time I’ve been and while I’ve always enjoyed it, I’ve been less impressed with the food each time. Hard to pinpoint but maybe seasoning and overall food presentation. For example, I ordered the cochinita pibil and all I got was a bowl of meat. I had to ask for some tortillas to eat it with. Then I asked for salsa. With those to adds, I was able to eat it. Something just doesn’t seem to click. My husband got the fish / octopus duo and that was nice but also lacked seasoning. I hope this is constructive feedback

    Wonderful exploration of Mexican Cuisine through a tasting menu. We did the wine pairing as well and loved tasting through an all Mexican experience. Love the tasting menu in a more laid back environment!

    We have a seven course chef tasting menu. They made substitutions based on our dietary needs. Very accommodating, especially for a chefs tasting menu. Excellent food and service. Highly recommend. I’m a chef and it was the best meal I had in Puerto Vallarta

    Our first dinner at Makal and it won’t be our last. Delicious cocktails, innovative cuisine with locally sourced ingredients, top notch service. This restaurant has it all. Served with casual Professionalism. My husband had the a La carte menu but next time we return we will enjoy the tasting menu. It’s a must when in PV !!!

    Tried the 7-course tasting menu and everything was delicious. They specialize in Mexican wines and the glasses and bottles we had were very lovely. Very cozy place and owners and chef are accommodating and friendly.

    We had a really good dinner at this restaurant. The chef is obviously reaching for the stars with his creations and most often he succeeds for this diner. The octopus main dish was one of the best I have ever had, and I try to choose octopus whenever I find it on a menu. The starters were a mixed bag - the pork belly was tough, but the quinoa tostadas had good flavors and textures. I loved the pink sangria with the strawberry shrub - my husband was not enthusiastic about his. The churros and the carlota for dessert were both delicious. Overall, I am looking forward to returning when we are next in PV.

    Makal is traditional Mexican flavors translated through some very refined cooking techniques, all in an atmosphere that is not at all stuffy but is instead friendly and relaxed. And the cocktails are as amazing as the food. All of the staff are highly professional but are at the same time open, engaging and full of interesting information.

    Amazing as always! One person tried the 7-course tasting menu…and WOW! We loved all of our entrées, the drinks, and the service (Antonio and Frida). It was our third time at MAKAL and we’ll be back. Consistently incredible!

    10 course meal was lots of food, and some items were quite good. But other items were just average. Our main course iron steak was raw and cold in the middle, but we were so full by that point anyway, we just didn't eat it. Also ordered a $60 bottle of wine, but was offered a better tasting "similar bottle" that ended up being almost double the price. Nice bottle of wine, but not "similar". Overall, the meal wasn't bad and it was a lot of food, just not worth the price ($400 for two with tip). There are better places in town for that money.

    What a fantastic experience at Makal! The 10-course menu was exquisite we especially loved the dessert courses. Cocktails were fun and original! Our service was also a great compliment to the meal offering not just commentary on the food but on the neighborhood and city as well. We really enjoyed this meal and will definitely be back. Highly recommend for a laid-back fine dining experience!

    We sat at the bar. Only tree little places, but what a nice moment we have shared with the restaurant’s team. Our barman, Dany, is the nicest, most engaging and attention to details person you may fine! My drink « the Quetzal » was fabulous and the food really delicious as for the eye than the taste buds!!! If you are in PV please do not think twice to try this small but so nice restaurant. Enjoy! Merci pour tout Dany! :)

    I was so hopeful this place would be great after reading the reviews but it was such a flop. Despite the place only having a couple of other seated tables, the service was excruciatingly slow (20 mins for drinks, 1hr+ for food), the food came out cold and our meat was tough and literally raw. The flavors were fine but not amazing and portions were undeniably small. And for all that it’s PRICEY. This is one to skip.

    We felt many of the dishes were good and interesting, but because we both got the tasting menu and our friends did not, the pace of each dish was off and we ended up having to get our wait staff over to get out last few dishes. We needed more attention. Not sure if the Caesar salad should have been included last night, but we did not get it on the 10 course. Over all interesting and the barley risotto was great!

    One of the finest dining experiences of my life! 10 course dinner for about $75 USD. Mind-blowing, roll your eyes back in your head flavors and unexpected combinations of ingredients. Friendly and efficient service in an artsy and comfortable setting.

    We started with cocktails - the ‘Smokey’ cocktails was very good and the most memorable cocktail I’ve had - it you like ‘smoke’ this is your cocktail. We chose the 7 course dinner. Every course was good - no standouts - just good food. Service was wonderful and so an overall fun evening.
