About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
At PAYAKK, our culinary journey is deeply rooted in the lifelong philosophy of Chef Tobb—shaped by over 30 years of experience, starting in a family kitchen in Phichit, a small town in the lower northern region of Thailand. From those early days to formal training at top culinary schools in Thailand and Japan, Chef has remained committed to a core belief: that food should be sustainable, health-conscious, and creatively inspired by local ingredients.

This philosophy lives on at PAYAKK. We honor Thai culinary traditions while reimagining them for today’s world—sharing the stories and flavors of Thailand with the Bay Area and beyond. Our approach is guided by a deep respect for the environment, a passion for ingredient integrity, and a desire to create meaningful cultural dialogue through food.

Chef Tobb believes that every dish connect East and West—and that true sustainability begins with mindful choices in the kitchen. At PAYAKK, every plate is a step toward that vision.

This is the most beautiful Thai Food to be found here. Chef Tobb is so talented and loves what she does, and you can taste both in the food. I love the vibe of the restaurant to. The ambiance is funky and fun. Its a great restaurant to dine alone or with a group.

Food, as on prior visit, was off the hook good. Staff wasn’t super attentive- food came all at the same time. We were told they ran out of rice when we asked for more- maybe short staffed

Payakk was a wonderful discovery. We loved the interesting and very tasty food, (roast duck and black cod), and enjoyed the warm and friendly ambiance. It was quire loud because of many conversations, but we found a quiet table. We'll be back, although next time will order a vegetable dish or side, since no veggies were included with our two main dished. Parking is a bit dicey -- give yourself time to find a spot.

This was our second visit to Payakk, which is a wonderful addition to the Montclair area. The food was excellent and brought to our table while still hot. The menu had great selections that you likely won't find at a typical Thai restaurant, and it had many items that we were tempted to try. Service was friendly and attentive. Atmosphere was casual and inviting. Our only problem was that the music being played was quite loud for this fairly small place, causing patrons to really raise their voices to carry on a conversation.

Portions small. Hardly any saucee to soeak of! Big wad of dry white rice but no sauce to even drip over it. The Padthai was dry and bland. The shrimp and prawns and crab were however tasty and plentiful. No vegetables at all. Had to order a side of mushrooms. We wont be coming back. About $124 with a tip. Ridiculous. Service was friendly and helpful.

My husband and I have been looking forward to try this place for a few months. Food was great, but I was disappointed by the service. It took so long to get cocktails, get to order a bottle of wine for food, and get the wine served. (we had to drink cocktails with food while waiting for wine.). And they brought a different bottle from what we ordered. Also, the while rockfish that we ordered was much smaller than the one in neighboring tables. Both sides from our table ordered the same fish, and ours was visibly smaller than others'.

Fun, buzzy spot on a Sunday night. Service was friendly and competent. Pad Thai well done without being unique; duck larb was delicious; the mushrooms in the green beans and mushrooms were wonderful, while the green beans were unremarkable. Wines by the glass were well-matched to the food.

The food is very good and there are so many dishes that I have never had before that I will be coming back several times to try them all. The small plates were all so intriguing that it was difficult to choose among them. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that the small plate we ordered came with the main courses and we wanted to savor them as an appetizer. That could be our fault for not telling the waitress to bring the small plate first before the main courses.

From the second I walked in the door I felt transported to Bangkok. Service was attentive but not overbearing, wine choices were on point, and there was a DJ spinning esoteric Thai vinyl that gave the ambiance an incredibly unique feel. Will be returning to try menu items we missed.
