Salaryman is Chef Stephen Seckold’s own take on a grungy, modern-day noodle-bar. Located in Surry Hills, Salaryman is the inspiration of Seckold who has always been a fan of the Japanese phenomenon ‘salaryman’ and being a chef, he saw a synergy with this ‘work hard, play hard’ ethos that has inspired the name.

It’s not hard to notice Seckold’s fine-dining flair applied to the daily-changing menu at Salaryman, with large focus on seasonal produce.
With the cocktails dictated by daily markets while showcasing the unusual through out the beer/wine list.

Food was really impressive- I really liked the modern twist on Asian food. The stand out dish for us was the ribs with steam buns.

Had a great experience at Salaryman - the lamb belly in particular was amazing. Great cocktails and starters including the chinese bread w bone marrow. Will go back soon!

Great fit out, drinks and menu.

The front of house are friendly and efficient but lacked a little polish, if that makes sense.
A couple of them seemed professional but the others lacked that little spark of professionalism.

Overall a great experience though and will be recommending my friends check it out.

A great find - delicious, creative food and a fun vibe. The service was attentive, but in between courses the food was very slow. But that didn't spoil a fun night. The wine list was short and interesting. And the cocktails were great. We'll be back.

Great little find. Good for small groups as plates are designed to share. Wasn't a big fan of the noodles which is disappointing for "Japanese" cuisine. But loved the other dishes. Loaded fries - best value! The pork ribs DIY bao was delish! Would get that again.

Excellent dining experience, a little bit understaff in the beginning but service picked up towards end of the meal. had been here twice and would come back for the third time.

Excellent food, but the service was not with long delays to be greeted, seated and then once the order was taken hugely long intervals in between courses. The 7 'course' tasting menu was good food, but with 2 vegetable dishes counting as courses and no desert included, extras may be needed. I would not rush back, since whilst the food was good there are many equal restaurants with better service.

I never write reviews but Salaryman deserves one!
What made this experience was the incredible bar tender and his special "Tom yum" cocktail (I know it's a soup) but my god it was the best I'd ever tasted!
Food wise - go the octopus and fried enoki plate, watermelon, sesame cucumber salad and the pecorino corn.
Cheers salaryman will definitely be back x

It was just ok, combination of Ramen being taken off the menu for summer, and dishes feeling random and uninspired. Probably best to head to Chinatown.

Outstanding service! The wait-staff were very patient and went out of their way to accommodate our large group of 18. The food was was coming out fast and tasted absolutely exceptional. Everyone left feeling beyond satisfied. We will definitely return and recommend to friends. Thank you Salaryman!

clean lines with the most light being in the open kitchen . The kitchen staff effortlessly glide around the kitchen delivering impeccable food. The wine list is short but right on the mark and the choice of sakes are perfectly matched with the food

We were disappointed with our night out at Salaryman. It was a special occasion and we had guests in tow so even more of a let down. Food was really quite average. The pork buns were messy; they came as very dry ribs and you had to de-bone them to fill your buns. There was not much meat on them, being so dried out.
The kingfish sashimi was fresh enough but the sauce was murkey and took away from the pleasure of a dish which should be sharp and light and fresh. The ocean trout tartare was forgettable, the flavours entirely lost, and the tartare just a little smear on the side of the plate. The charred cucumbers were sliced so fine one had no idea if the cuckes were charred at all. The noodle soups were just plain boring, and the menu overall was pretty restrictive.
The restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night, and yet it was always an effort to get any attention for an extra drink or to order more food. As soon as someone appeared, it was very pleasant and friendly, but I think everyone who worked there came past our table at some point so there was no continuity and they were all so difficult to flag down.
I would not go back.

Would thoroughly recommend Salaryman for its modern take on traditional dishes. Great ambience, quality food/ ingredients and fantastic service.

Perfect venue for Friday lunches, business meetings or catch up with friends of an evening.

The wait staff kept forgetting orders and coming back to re-take them, the main courses took over 30 mins to arrive, the vege ramen was below average (very salty). Would not recommend (especially for group bookings) and would not return for any occasion.

What a great find. A beautiful fusion of Japanese izakaya dishes with a modern twist. The prawn okonomiyaki, the pork rib rack and the squid were standouts. Service was right up there. A definite place to return to - we need to try the duck ramen which looked amazing in the table next us.

We waited 20 minutes to be seated for a booked table. No one took our order or offered a drink for another 20 mins. Understand they where very busy but the whole restaurant was left waiting - the waiters didn't come to check on us as they were busy serving but that meant we were left waiting and nothing to drink. Wasn't impressed.

I went with our partner and we were seated by the kitchen. We both loved the theatre of seeing all the amazing food being created before us - especially the blasted scampi. The cocktails were brilliant and we couldn't fault the food. Because of the way the menu is set-out we were able to enjoy six courses - including the best sundae we've ever had. Great place!
