We dined recently for a Sunday brunch birthday party for my oldest son, as he has wanted to visit this restaurant for some time. Overall, it was fine, but I don't believe the experience was worth the cost. We don't plan to return.
I understand supply chain issues, but $11+ for a mixed drink and charging an additional $2 for ice cubes in a spirit? Really? Up-charging to swap fries for house-made chips? It felt very nickel and dime, when we were already paying quarters.
I have zero issue with tipping (20% is my bare minimum), but understand that you've felt it necessary to implement a 20% service charge because others apparently do have an issue, and I know as a business owner myself that securing staff is challenging. One of my sons works in the restaurant industry, so I completely get it! But for that imposed service charge, there should be consistent and robust service and not just someone talking us through online ordering. The number of times the lady with the iPad walked over to peer at us and then stand 5 feet away (from the only table in our area) and make notes was also unnerving, it felt very much like we were overstaying our welcome even when our food had not been served.
Again, nothing was overtly wrong with our visit. But for the cost, the experience was disappointing. I think it is a fine line between charging for increased costs and staffing challenges, and using it as an excuse to deliver a sub par experience for your guests.
Overall, dining at Rockett's Landing is a beautiful experience. The staff was very upbeat and the food was absolutely delicious.
We will be coming back!
The food was excellent and our server, Laura at table #102 was wonderful. I was just a little let down with the desserts but otherwise wonderful. Thank you!
We selected the Boat House for our first Thanksgiving in Richmond. We were informed the Boat House was a solid choice for our Thanksgiving . According to my co-workers, the Boathouse was a "good choice." I regret to say they were WRONG.
The room had no special THANKSGIVING appearance or decorations---it was dark. The buffet was not much better in appearance, more of a institutional look , aka cafeteria.
My TURKEY was not nicely sliced and layerd on my plate, no one was near the Turkey Station, the three birds were denuded of meat, and the meat remaining was in bits and pieces, ready for a salad, soup, but not a THANKSGIVING DINNE
This was a great Thanksgiving dinner pick! The food was delicious, hot, well prepared and presented. The service was excellent. We were pleasantly surprised by how well the facility maintained distance between parties. We were seated immediately even though we arrived about fifteen minutes early. This may be a new Thanksgiving tradition!
Went for Thanksgiving lunch and was not impressed with the food. Turkey and shrimp were great. But the green bean casserole was watery and flavorless. The salmon was salty, and the sweet potatoes appeared to be from a can with a few marshmallows, no extra like nuts, butter, brown sugar, etc. Desserts were ok. No whipped topping for the pumpkin pie. For 50$ a meal, I expected tastier food.
I went for Thanksgiving dinner which was better than I had expected it to be. The staff were very attentive. I begrudgingly went along with the OpenTable Service fee of 20% because you don’t have control over tipping, but it still worked out.
The music in the restaurant was way too loud to hear anyone wearing a mask. Everyone should have been wearing a name tag saying “Huh.”
All in all it was an enjoyable experience, but I don’t care for the scan to order or read a menu. I look at my phone enough in life and prefer to get away from it when I dine out. It is why I am treating myself and family to a meal out.
I will avoid restaurants that choose this. Casa del Barco is on my list to avoid as they do this also.
I’d say it would be a recommended restaurant, provided you know to expect an additional automatic 20% charge to cover tipping and etc????
Food was great, staff was friendly and wait time was tolerable.
We arrived for ourThanksgiving lunch, we were seated fairly quickly, the food and service were exceptional!
Organized, excellent service, tasty food, and a beautiful view of the James River.
Non-alcoholic beverages should have been included in the meal price per person.
Overall, a fantastic Thanksgiving experience.
Overall is was a very nice dinner. I didn't care for having to order my own food over an app on my phone, pre approve my credit card and accept a 20% service fee / tip upfront before being served.
First time using a menu app. Our waitress was very patient with us showing how it worked.
Need to go back to regular table service. I’ve tried the order from the phone stuff with a big group of 12 and more a small group of 2 and it’s been awful both times.
GREAT FOOD.....GREAT SERVICE.... EVERYTHING WAS GREAT!
When in Williamsburg, always went there for brunch. Never again. Changed the way you order and pay. You order from your phone (from a very limited menu) and then pay for it at the same time. No chance to determine whether to tip waitress. Automatically adds 20%. BUT you can add more tip if desired afterwards although can’t reverse any of the 20% already in bill. So DISAPPOINTED! Really liked the ambiance, view from windows and the old menu. But, as I said previously, NEVER WILL GO THERE AGAIN!
It was difficult and time consuming for me to order drinks appetizers and entree off of a I Phone. I Paid a 20% tip and waited pretty much on myself. Instead of relaxing I was scrolling through the menu and ordering from my phone.
The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing was an excellent experience.
The food was delicious and the service was 5 stars. Eating on the patio at Sunset was surreal. Great restaurant to visit in RVA.
I didn’t like the food at all. Except the French toast sticks and the zookie. Even my drink(limeade) was terrible. Our waiter was very polite and kind. She helped us fix everything and stayed very calm. I almost felt bad because none of it was one her. Not my favorite place bad birthday experience. Half our party arrived first and we all
Ordered. Still somehow the second half got there order before some of the first few. Not the best experience.
Food was fairly good although a tad overpriced. No complaints with service. Dining area was VERY cold and atmosphere was noisy. Have been to at least ten better restaurants in the Richmond, Virginia area.
You're paying premium prices for Cheesecake Factory food (no offense to Cheesecake Factory, they have their place). Like others, shocked at the 20% service charge even though we had to flag our waitress down multiple times just to get one water refill for a table of 8. Sandwich came out without the sauce it was supposed to, and the payment system is convoluted. I'm not going back.
It is a lovely setting and food is good but we found the ordering online difficult. Hard to see and evaluate all of the items and we didn’t get exactly what we wanted.
I enjoy the self-service automated ordering system. The apple cider Moscow mule is ah-mazing. I will come back just to get that…
The process for ordering and paying at the table is off putting.
Good was great but the room was so big and open it was a little too big. It was uncomfortable. But the food was great.
The thing that makes the rating so low is that you have to order online as a self-service function and have a 20% upcharge placed for the privilege of doing it yourself. And there seemed to be plenty of wait staff there. There are better ways other restaurants are doing to minimize touch without degrading customer service.
The food compares to and surpasses many of the 5-star restaurants I’ve eaten at in NYC.
My meal: The Seafood Combo and because I don’t eat shrimp I swapped for extra scallops. TO. DIE. FOR. Any chef who gets scallops just right is top notch in my book. 30-seconds either way makes a difference in texture. Beautifully seasoned too. My crab cake was a close second. Did I mention the asparagus? Perfectly cooked. So much so that my cousin who does not like asparagus, ate all of hers, to my disappointment. I was hoping to get her portion 😊
I raved so much about the food that the Chef, Ted, surprised us with a visit to our table.
My only regret was not taking a photo with him.
It’s fair to say that I will be dining with them again when next I visit Richmond.
Sorry, was already eating when I thought to take a pic of my plate.
While the food was great, the “no server” service ruined the experience. It made it very difficult for our large party to focus on each other because we were so busy trying to figure out the system and keep track of what we needed to order next. Our empty glasses and plates were not cleared unless we hailed someone over. We also had multiple drink orders made incorrectly, which was shocking considering we ordered them through an online system with an exact list of options. One meal even arrived 10 minutes before everyone else’s. We spoke to a manager about everything and she was less than helpful. She told us, “the system isn’t going anywhere,” which felt like a passive aggressive way of telling us to get over it. Overall, the experience was not worth the price of our meals and not at all up to par for such a high end restaurant. We were thoroughly disappointed and will not return.
Awesome delicious and worth every Penny and the view was beautiful, will definitely visit again.
Very nice atmosphere good food. Great service. Enjoyed our anniversary.
The digital ordering only system was impersonal and made for an odd and ordinary dining experience. Yes safety is important and appreciated but couldn’t even get a cup of tea added easily without going through the app. Didn’t feel
Like fine dining.
Food was cold when it was served. The food is good but not anything special, seems to be overpriced for the amount you get.
food was not very enjoyable
The starters were great but a couple of our fish dishes were incredibly salty! My mashed potatoes were barely lukewarm, fish overcooked. My mom could barely eat her salmon. The servers were very nice but they can’t take your order - you have to use this very unintuitive app. Bizarre. Owner is probably just trying to crank through more tables each night. But a weird experience to not ever be given a paper menu, and to pay completely on the app as well. You just kind of leave once you pay your tab in the app. We’ve done plenty of qr code ordering but really what’s the point of doing it all online when you’re in person?? It doesn’t feel very human. We won’t go back. We’ve seen the view. We’re done.
I really enjoyed the restaurant. Using an online tool for ordering was a bit awkward but I guess you get used to it. My steak was not very good. It was overcooked and not much flavor
The restaurant was very noisy. The food very good. Was served quickly but not the waiter who initially greeted us. Saw him as we were leaving. Everything is online. You order and pay via an app on your smart phone. Then different people bring you your orders.
BE AWARE they charge you 20% service fee and then ask for an additional tip on your bill. BUT here is the kicker- you also pay a 13% state and city tax on the 20% service fee. I do not feel this if fair.
I tip based on service and normally it is 20%. In this case I was forced to pay 20% and the server never brought any food to me. Probably will never go back there.
The atmosphere was good, food was mediocre. Corn and Jalapeño hush puppies were good, but that was the only item that really made an impression. Outdoor dining on the river at sunset was beautiful atmosphere.
