When it come to British Tea, tradition make everything taste better. No one has more tradition than Brown’s Hotel, the oldest luxury hotel in London. The service is unobtrusive and efficient; the live piano music in the background is perfect. The presentation was simple and sophisticated the tea sandwiches were tasty and ample. The pastries the same; best of all were the warm scones with crème fraiche and homemade strawberry jam. You are encouraged to get seconds but honestly I found the first pass very filling. You can take home seconds as well. Also, a dash of history—it was Queen Vidtoria’s favorite place for tea, since it was near Buckinham Palace. Brown’s was the place where Bell placed the first transatlantic call from the UK. The room and model telephone are preserved. Rudyard Kipling and Agatha Christie were frequent guests. Finally Christie incorporated Brown’s in her novel, “At Bertram’s Hotel”. As I said, tradition makes the British tea at Brown’s Hotel even more delicious.

The waiter was very attentive, and the sandwich selection was exceptional. There was so much selection we had to get a to-go box because we were full at the tea.

The Drawing Room was the best tea I had on my entire trip to the UK! The tea selection was great and the food was fantastic. All the servers, hosts, and employees were kind and courteous. There was a pianist playing while we were there at the perfect volume to provide nice background music to set the ambiance while my friend and I were able to easily hear each other while chatting. The room itself was beautifully decorated and had fun sitting areas. The location is wonderful for going shopping right before or after.

Staff not attentive enough Nit good value for money. For such afternoon tea quality of food at most can only charge the customers half of the price

Brown's remains one of the best places for a full cream tea in town. Every aspect was superb, from the elegant ambience, little changed over the years, to the food itself -- we had a rose champagne with ours, making it a festive afternoon for our party of three, who dine out egularly. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty, the scones perfect, and the pastries among the best, particularly the miniature choux with vanilla filling. Our waiter was delightful, and the pianist at the end of the room was festive, and not too loud to interfere with conversation. A nice touch is that you can change teas mid course and have a different one for the sweets. All in all, a definite winner.

FAQs

For the classic experience, go for Afternoon Tea between 12:00 and early evening, that’s when the room is lively and the full tea service (and live pianist at times) is on offer. If you prefer a quieter visit, try a weekday sitting or an earlier afternoon slot and book in advance, guests frequently note it’s popular for special occasions.

Portions follow the classic afternoon‑tea format: small, carefully prepared finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of pastries, but guests consistently say the offering is plentiful. Reviews describe the sandwiches as fresh, scones as “perfect, ” and the pastries among the best, so you’ll get a satisfying, multi‑course tea experience rather than single large plates.

Yes, The Drawing Room is an elegant, intimate spot perfect for a special date. Guests praise the genteel wood‑panelled tea room, live pianist and attentive service, and the option to add Champagne makes it feel celebratory. It’s best for a relaxed, refined afternoon or early evening experience rather than a loud night out; book ahead for a prime table and consider the Champagne Afternoon Tea for an extra-special treat.

The Drawing Room is a genteel tea room with original wood panelling, contemporary artwork and traditional table seating, a refined salon rather than multiple private dining rooms. There’s an elegant single dining space with a pianist mentioned by guests; the hotel notes private parties are not offered.

There’s no official “best day” listed, but if you prefer a slightly quieter experience aim for a weekday afternoon rather than weekends when afternoon tea tends to be busiest. Regardless of day, advance booking is recommended because guests frequently return and the service is popular.

The atmosphere is genteel, refined and welcoming, classic London tearoom meets modern sophistication. Guests praise the warm service, elegant wood‑panelled room, live piano music that’s not intrusive, and a festive yet relaxed tone ideal for special treats or celebrations.

Yes, you can. The Drawing Room asks for 48‑hour notice for dietary requests and for the Children’s Jungle Book themed Afternoon Tea; bookings require a credit card and cancellations within one day incur charges, so call ahead to confirm special seating or menu requests.

Busiest: during Afternoon Tea hours (12:00–18:30), the Drawing Room is well known for its tea service and is frequently described by guests as a popular, festive experience. Quietest: weekday mornings or outside main tea service (early breakfast or later evening dinner hours) tend to be calmer. Advance booking is recommended for peak tea times.

Smart casual. The hotel requests smart casual attire for guests visiting The Drawing Room, matching its elegant yet relaxed afternoon‑tea setting.

Yes, families and children do visit regularly. Guests report bringing daughters and American friends for afternoon tea, and the hotel offers a themed Children’s Jungle Book Afternoon Tea (48‑hour notice). For younger children consider an earlier sitting and booking in advance.
