The Horned Dorset Inn is the quintessential destination for memorable fine dining and lodging in central New York, serving seasonal, contemporary and classical French cuisine. Chef Wratten combines produce from the restaurant’s own organic gardens with locally produced meats and cheeses. Fish is an affinity for the chef, given 25 years at his signature restaurant in Rincon, Puerto Rico, and vegetarians will delight in his mindful creations. Aaron is an alumnus of “Aureole” under Charlie Palmer and “Restaurant Daniel” under Daniel Boulud. Located in a beautifully restored historical building, in the small town of Leonardsville it has been lovingly managed by the same family for nearly 40 years. Information about accommodations in their gracious Victorian inn and off-premises catering are available on the website or by phone.

We visit The Dorset twice per year and it is such a treat! The food is always excellent, well seasoned and includes seasonal veggies from their garden! The French touches always make me long for Paris. The owners are warm and inviting and you can really tell they take pride in the food as well as welcoming patrons to their restaurant. Enjoy an amazing cocktail (The Aviator is amazing!) in their library upstairs with the complimentary warm cheese and house made crackers...it's our favorite part!

The Horned Dorset is an iconic upstate restaurant but it failed to live up to its reputation on our last two visits. The building itself is magnificent and it was an incredible labor of love to create this fabulous restaurant and hotel out of pieces of local estates and mansions. Our most recent meal started with drinks and the famous Horned Dorset dip (greasy but delicious). Our first appetizer was sweetbreads, which we loved at The Canalside, but these were rubbery and lacked any flavor. I had Coquilles St.- Jacques (the scallop, not to be confused with the preparation!!), which were tasty and accompanied by a delicious cauliflower pancake. They were slightly underdone and only 2 and a half scallops?! The salad course, which had not been mentioned by our server, was leaf lettuce with a dollop of cole slaw on top, an odd combination, My husband's filet was overcooked-how does that happen at a restaurant of this caliber? My fish was dry but had good flavors. It was accompanied by braised endive-I love endive, but braised endive does nothing to make a plate look appetizing. We ordered a bottle of white wine which was not chilled-room temperature white wines?-really?! We tried ice creams for dessert-good but not outstanding.
Great ambience-go have a cocktail or two and enjoy the beautiful architectural details. Better yet, go have a cocktail on a Friday night when Carleton Clay and Rich Mollin are making beautiful music at The Horned Dorset.

I knew I was going to an upscale restaurant and therefore pretty much everything had to be top-notch. While the service was outstanding, the ambiance was great, for me, the food was good, not great. And that's really what you go to a great restaurant for.
I've been to some less upscale restaurants where the ambiance may not have been as nice, but services was equal and food was better... and the price was lower.
If you're in the area and don't want to go to far afield, then the Horned Dorset can be an option.

Everything was lovely. The service was personable and attentive without being bothersome. The wine list was well thought out and expansive. And the food was impeccably prepared. The veal with fois gras, peas and egg was divine. Sweetbreads! They have sweetbreads.

I can't believe there could be a better nicer place for dinner in upstate NY. All aspects of dinner were perfect. Waite staff and hostess were in touch with the menu and very helpful when ordering.
Honestly the only thing that could have been better was the handicapped access.

My husband and I went to the Horned Dorset for his birthday, and we overjoyed with our experience! The service, ambience and especially food were amazing. I had the lamb and he had the duck and both dishes were delicious, we also loved the homemade crackers and cheese dish they served us when we first arrived. I would recommend this restaurant to all!!

Upscale, continental dining. A welcome change from the chain upscale restaurants. The personal greetings, the quiet attention, the excellent cuisine all makes the Horned Dorset a go-to restaurant for a special occasion or merely a special night out.

One has to travel to New York or Boston for a restaurant experience like Horned Dorset. The dinner was so well paced that I was shocked to find it took two and a half hours. That also speaks to the comfortable chairs! When asked for a wine recommendation, our server recommended a lower priced wine, not trying to pad the bill. The wine turned out to be lovely. If you can afford it, treat yourself and come here. When you consider the time and expense to get to a comparable restaurant outside the area, this is a value!

From entry to exit we were treated like treasured guests. This is the pinnacle of fine dining. We sampled liberally from the menu and each course was a delight. I recommend this restaurant to all who appreciate high level cuisine. Thanks to all staff who made this a wonderful evening for my son and I. He was celebrating a Birthday and College graduation.

The service was excellent. The wait staff courteous and attentive. We had duck that was well prepared and did not have the fatty taste it can sometimes have. The decor is calming and comfortable, even on Mother's day one did not feel hurried or crowded.

This was a special occasion for my partner and me, and the Horned Dorset was the perfect setting to celebrate. It provided us an opportunity to dress up and enjoy some incredible food, served in an informative and delightful manner. Each course was timed perfectly, and we left feeling the perfect amount of full. It is not a restaurant that's in our usual price range, but it was wonderful for this special event.
