The Horned Dorset Inn
Well satisfied as always , best place for a special occasion
Always amazing from start to finish. Excellent, savory food, fab presentation, and a delightful atmosphere. An experience I love.
We have been dining here for the last 25 years. It is just perfect!
Everything about the dining experience was excellent. As always.
The best meal I have had in a long time!
The attention to every detail of the preparation and presentation was completely noticed and appreciated.
The service was delightful.
Loved our tour of the building: we are antique and architecture aficionados.
Our wine was lovely.
The “Happy Anniversary” dessert platter was so thoughtful.
Can not wait to come again!
I grew up in Clinton and Senora Wratten was my Spanish teacher.
A perfect spot for our 22 anniversary. Unbelievable menu, preparation, presentation and entire staff was obviously trained to the "T" and focused on making the experience unforgettable...loved it.
Dining at the Horned Dorset Friday is always a special treat. The food is unique, service is formal executed perfectly and the musicians make the ambiance pleasurable. Worth the trip!
Upon entering until leaving a wonderful experience. Very welcoming staff. The food was beyond great. This meal tops any we have had in the past. No small portions as experienced at other, so called, hi end restaurants. This is dining not eating. A menu large enough for picky eaters to find something. We had a 3 course meal. The soufflé was wonderful. Very expensive but well worth it. A very special experience. Cannot wait to go back!
My husband and I were in the area for a getaway weekend and besides going to The Baseball Hall of Fame, we were looking for other things to do and places to eat. The Horned Dorset came up as a “must try.” It did not disappoint. The food was delicious and fresh, as most is sourced locally and the service and ambience hit just the right note for us, as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We would definitely go back.
My wife and I have not been to the Horned Dorset in many years. Our visit last Friday made me think "Why the heck have we not been back?" and What have we been thinking?"
The reservation experience with Open Table App was easy and seamless.
On our arrival, we were warmly and respectfully greeted.
Our cocktails were flawlessly prepared. The martinis arrived in shakers that were poured tableside.
The winelist is large and has something for everyone. Whether a value wine or a splurge, a bottle of a glass. Yeah, they've got it!
Appetizers were 2 Foie Gras with Strawberry flavors and 1 Pasta special...tagliatelle and mushrooms, I think. Spectacular for both!
HD provides you with an included house salad next(not a la carte like the steak houses were now used to!). Fresh and made with produce from their own garden! Simply dressed.
Entrees were 2 orders of 2 Veal Medallions with a farm fresh fried egg and Foie Gras, and Pork prepared 2 ways. Scrumptious!
Our 3rd Diner chose the 4 course small plates- seafood menu: Grav Lox, Scallops, Lobster Bisque en crote and Halibut. All expertly prepared and served...and, by the way, she did NOT go home hungry!
Dessert was a Raspberry Souflee served with creme Inglasse...WHAT?? and a 4 piece tasting. Each and every bite a treat!
The service was unobtrusive, polite and very classy...like it should be in a fine restaurant such as this!
After dinner we chatted with Madeline. She related the rich history of the Horned Dorset and how her family arrived in the area in 1977. We took a tour of the inn and private dining room, as well as the Resident Artists' Gallery. Very cool!
If you haven't been here yet..."What are you waiting for?"
I've been coming here for 40 years and it is still one of my favorite restaurants in the world.
We had an outstanding meal at the Horned Dorset. I have several dietary "issues" and the chef went out of his way to accommodate me. The staff was extremely hospitable. From the moment we entered the inn, we were treated as if we were part of the family, although this was our first visit. I had the four course chef selection meal....each part was extraordinary. I can't wait to return.
We went for our anniversary dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the meal the wine and the jazz.
I took my wife to The Horned Dorset for her 60th birthday. I wanted to make it very special. The folks and the food at this restaurant did not disappoint. Thank you for a special evening!
Outstanding restaurant in a beautiful location. Food excellent with most helpful and accommodating staff.
For the quality, a bargain compared to similar restaurants in large cities.
The Horned Dorset was memorable in every way. What a treat to dine in the beautiful space—a rare experience to be treasured!
Always outstanding in every respect. I love this place
I have been coming here for six or seven years when I go to the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. It is consistence in its excellence
Great food and good service. Unexpected in such a remote location. We have been before and will certainly return. A plus is having a nice room a few steps away.
We love to stop here on the way to Glimmerglass for the terrific food.
My family and I love the food and adore the staff!
Superb in every way!!!!
The Horned Dorset was perhaps the best dining experience I've had thus far, so much so that the selfish part of me wants to keep it a secret! However the good part of me prevails, and thus wants to express gratitude for the wonderful memory. The Horned Dorset Inn is a hidden gem out in the open on Rt 8 in rural New York State, nestled among farmlands and similar small towns. The story of its origin is sweet and too long to mention here, but suffice it to say that the love that has gone into its creation is obvious from the moment one enters to the moment they leave. Our first visit was 35 years ago when we were first married and we finally returned to celebrate our anniversary to find that the owners and staff have maintained the same high level of quality that we recall from our first visit. The Horned Dorset is gaining a reputation as an artist in residence colony several months of the year. Accomodations at the Inn are comfortable and beautifully furnished. We will not wait another 35 years for a third visit to be sure!
Recommend with reservations.
Should have been a solid 5 star. The elegance of the Horned Dorset is noteworthy. The signature cheese and crackers started off the meal well. The salad was novel and excellent. The duck confit and breast was done perfectly with and interesting array of accompaniments. The lamb chops tasted very good, but were overdone; medium well instead of rare. That kind of error occurs, but what downgraded the whole experience was the lack of the wait staff's checking back to find out if all was to out liking. That did not occur until after some of it was eaten and the duck finished. The waiter was trying to make amends, but did not succeed. The owner should have checked in with us, but didn't. Our dessert was given to us on the house, but the lamb dish should have been removed from the cost. All of this because no one checked back. Dessert was very good.
Always our favorite place for a wonderful dinner. The ambience, service and quality of food is impeccable.
My wife and had been planning to go here for a long time. The service and food were outstanding. A bit out of the way, but worth the drive.
We had a wonderful evening where everything was perfect. It’s been too long since we’ve been at the Horned Dorset and are reminded that we should come much more often.
Mimi family reunion.
The Horned Dorset is hands down is our favorite place to eat. Food is fabulous - the opening hot cheese sauce and crackers is SO good and gets you in the mood for great entrees to come. The service is unparalleled... all in a lovely relaxing atmosphere - often with perfectly modulated music in the dining room. Could not be better. We look forward to every one of our evenings there.
A Hidden gem. A trip is worth it. Found it on our trip to Glimmerglass ...will return
Absolutely Spectacular!!! The Horned Dorsett Inn lives on with great admiration by all of us.
What a erasure this place is. Everything was outstanding- the freshest, high quality foods expertly and creatively prepared.
We visit The Dorset twice per year and it is such a treat! The food is always excellent, well seasoned and includes seasonal veggies from their garden! The French touches always make me long for Paris. The owners are warm and inviting and you can really tell they take pride in the food as well as welcoming patrons to their restaurant. Enjoy an amazing cocktail (The Aviator is amazing!) in their library upstairs with the complimentary warm cheese and house made crackers...it's our favorite part!
Perfect place to celebrate special occasions or just to enjoy a fabulous meal anytime. Thank you for making us feel appreciated . Our waiter was patient as I had several questions.
Excellent food and service in a beautiful setting.
As always, delicious food, excellent service and great atmosphere - a perfect evening. We truly enjoy dinner at The Horned Dorset whenever we visit from STL.
The Horned Dorset is an iconic upstate restaurant but it failed to live up to its reputation on our last two visits. The building itself is magnificent and it was an incredible labor of love to create this fabulous restaurant and hotel out of pieces of local estates and mansions. Our most recent meal started with drinks and the famous Horned Dorset dip (greasy but delicious). Our first appetizer was sweetbreads, which we loved at The Canalside, but these were rubbery and lacked any flavor. I had Coquilles St.- Jacques (the scallop, not to be confused with the preparation!!), which were tasty and accompanied by a delicious cauliflower pancake. They were slightly underdone and only 2 and a half scallops?! The salad course, which had not been mentioned by our server, was leaf lettuce with a dollop of cole slaw on top, an odd combination, My husband's filet was overcooked-how does that happen at a restaurant of this caliber? My fish was dry but had good flavors. It was accompanied by braised endive-I love endive, but braised endive does nothing to make a plate look appetizing. We ordered a bottle of white wine which was not chilled-room temperature white wines?-really?! We tried ice creams for dessert-good but not outstanding.
Great ambience-go have a cocktail or two and enjoy the beautiful architectural details. Better yet, go have a cocktail on a Friday night when Carleton Clay and Rich Mollin are making beautiful music at The Horned Dorset.
We had a great time. The food was great and so was the service. My wife and I had an enjoyable evening.
Dinner was delicious and the service was impeccable. We highly recommend this dining experience.
The atmosphere, food and service was exceptional. It is a wonderful surprise in the middle of Upstate, New York.
