Midtown Oyster Bar
Our two story building offer 2 bar areas, the first floor tavern and the second floor Burgee Bar. Located right on Thames Street, there is no better place in town to watch the hustle and bustle of downtown Newport. Our tavern area has high top tables for a casual, bar atmosphere, where you can gather with friends to enjoy a great meal, or a few beverages. Three dining rooms and two outside decks allow for plenty of dining space as well as the availability for private parties. Whether you are looking for casual snacks and cocktails with friends or a formal dining experience, Midtown Oyster Bar has everything you could possibly be looking for.
I went here for restaurant week and the food was so good and the staff was amazing! I want to go back again!
We were a party of five and all of us decided to choose to order from the Restaurant Week Menu for $35. It was a great value and didn't disappoint. They had a few different main entree choices to choose from and all were great. We all chose the warm apple spice cake with ice cream for dessert and it was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was awesome; very attentive. We'll definitely go back!
Scallops were delicious!
Great fresh seafood. I had a delicious Sword Fish. Nice variety of appetizers.
I thought this was an exceptional lunch experience. Beautiful place. We were on the second level with the flags hanging around us, lots of windows, very open and airy. Waiting for friends, we started with a coffee and hot tea to offset the driving rain from which we had just come in. Smoked fish dip was excellent and a generous portion, I thought. Calamari was good but not the best I've had. We had drinks and then ordered lunch. Everyone but me had fish and chips and they said it was good. I had the mussels frites. Someone had posted a funny review on Yelp saying that he had ordered the mussels and they were so big he was traumatized. In fact, my order did have some pretty big mussels, but nothing that I considered grotesque. The frites had a nice aioli drizzled over them but not enough -- I would encourage the restaurant to include a small ramekin with aioli for dipping like red stripe does. I had a very nice glass of Riesling to go with everything. Overall, it was a beautiful setting, the food was good, the menu interesting with lots of other offerings I would one day like to try, and the prices were excellent.
Nice menu, good service, good draft beer list. The problem with this restaurant is the food. The fish was dry and overcooked and we highly suspect that our halibut was not halibut but cod. My wife and I are from Boston and eat a lot of halibut. The oyster bar and oyster selection are very good. Would not return although this is the type of restaurant that usually appeals to us.
Good service. the scallops were fab, the pork and clans so tasty. Good beer selection. And no waiters hasslung you all the time, which I hate!
Had a late night dinner at Midtown. We opted for the Newporter seafood medley. Food was outstanding, service was very good, and the atmosphere was great. Large eating area so it did not fee like people were surrounding you. After dinner, we had drinks on the second floor roof top bar which was a fantastic ending to a great meal. I especially recommend this restaurant for people who like oysters and other shellfish.
The oysters were fantastic! Also, the sirloin steak and lobster roll were exceptionally tasty!
Great fresh oysters, enjoyed the cod chowder, and a fantastic lobster roll. Had a reservation, but chose to sit a high-top in the bar. Nice, energetic atmosphere that made for a great evening.
Food and service was very good. First time dining here and will return.
We had an excellent lunch at Midtown Oyster Bar. It was our second visit to this restaurant. The food and service were great. We will definitely be back next visit to Newport!
I have been here before and it was fantastic but last night it was not great. Fish was over cooked they served us old wine that tasted like vinegar and salads were average
At almost $200 for dinner for two with a single drink each it was very disappointing and we won’t be back.
Really nothing special. Two of us got the Norwegian Salmon it was dry and was over cooked. Cowboy pork chop was too salty. Little choice in salads but the wedge was really uninspired and the dressing was not good. I’d say the service was good but the way the server returned the credit card was sloppy and it was left behind. Trying to get a the staff to assist in retrieving it was difficult and it too several visits to get it back. There were a lot of cards left behind so it wasnt just us.
Good restaurant, but definitely a tourist destination.
Everything was fine. The only con would be the noise level. It was very loud.
The overall experience was a good one. The location was perfect right next to our hotel. We had dinner there two nights in a row. Food good, but service inconsistent. First night there were delays in taking food orders. Second night, the second and third course were served as we were still eating the previous courses.
On our reservation, We had requested a “QUIET TABLE.” We were seated upstairs.
Rather than being in a quit corner, next to us was a party room (doors open) and a large gathering of boisterous guests. The noise level was Loud+++. We asked to have another table,
And were told that there were no downstairs tables available.
Our new table was 2 away from our previous one. No change in noise level.
Our waitress never explained the 2 menues, as she did for guests sitting at the next table.
While the oysters were fine, my scallops were over cooked and “rubbery.”
The overall experience was so disappointing that we left without even considering
Coffe, and/or dessert.
Usually pretty good. Not this time. Oysters were pitifully tiny out of season. Tuna tacos were soggy, tuna poke was mostly filler, mussels were sandy in the pan roast and fluke fish box was over cooked. Scallop crudo lacked any acid or Oliver oil. Not great. Hope they do better next time.
Our service was a bit slow but was a very large party next to us that our waitress was also covering.
Didn’t know have any expectations before going to Midtown Oyster Bar but was pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and the service was great! Will definitely be going again.
Our server Claudia was fantastic! She was sweet, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious!
Our waitress was fantastic and the food is consistently amazing. One of our favorite places in Newport.
We have been To the Midtown Oyster Bar before however the Midtown’ food seems very over priced and inconsistent ... our meals were ok and other times they have been very good.
Brick alley food at The Mooring prices... maybe should have dined at The Mooring for the cost in the end .. services was very good.
I love their "fix box" specials, especially the halibut. The smoked fish dip is consistently good. We love the waitstaff. They are so warm and friendly.
Amazing Experience!!!! Jen our server was amazing, very experienced. We loved the oysters, tuna tartare tacos were the best, and my husband loved the scallops.
Excellent food with interesting combos. My drink was perfect. Our server was a delight. Overall wonderful experience, I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Fun location in the harbor. Food was okay but nothing special. Overpriced like most restaurants in the area. Service was great and the inside is very fun.
Our server, Deidre, was a great guide to Midtown's cuisine and craft cocktails. We had a lot of questions about ingredients and she made sure we enjoyed our meal. We'll be back!
I spoke with the manager about the poor service. She was receptive and responded in kind.
We loved this restaurant! We had a reservation, so we were seated right away. Loved the atmosphere, and the food and drinks were delicious! Highly recommend, we will definitely go back.
We enjoyed everything about our experience at Midtown Oyster. The ambiance was perfect, a good balance between romantic and fun, which is exactly what we were looking for considering it was our wedding anniversary but traveling with a 6 year old and 3 month old. Our waitress was super friendly and helped make our experience one to remember. Ok now the food... amazing!!! Hands down the best meal we had out in a long time.. so good we went back for lunch the next day. We absolutely recommend the octopus and sirloin steak, and of course the oysters were delicious...they were our main reason for going. They have a huge selection and are extremely fresh. We will definitely be coming back on our next trip to Newport!
Service could have been better. Asked her to stagger all the apps. They came out all at once , when we asked her about it she said oh I thought you wanted them all at once. Really never came over to ask how everything was. Food was excellent!! Great oysters, burrata salad, grilled octopus.
We both had the halibut for an entree it was cooked to perfection.
We waited for a table on the deck, was well worth the wait because of the beautiful sunset that we saw.
Came at around 3:30 for a 4:30 pm reservation- was in town for the Newport Boat Show and they had a decent crowd downstairs in the bar area. We opt’d into sitting upstairs were we could feel the air. The upstairs is a tall ceiling room, very bright & had cool flags! We had a server greet us and take our drinks, we also were greeted by an additional waitress. I had the summer sangria, overall opinion on it... it was more of a fall sangria than summer with cinnamon & brown sugar in it. Boyfriend had the tuna poke, says he loves it, best poke bowl. For dinner, I enjoyed the caramelized sea scallops!! Overall.... I’d return!
I was surprised at the large size of this place. I think your dining experience could be quite influenced by where you are seated. We ate an early dinner upstairs outside where it was fairly quiet and calm. There is a large upstairs dining area with a tall ceiling and nautical theme. More seating is downstairs where it’s cozier but less classy. The bar was hopping downstairs when we left around 7:00. We loved our fresh fish entrees. My large portion of swordfish was served on a delicious cauliflower pilaf. Fun, busy, popular place.
Very nice menu, good service, and nice ambience. A good effort is made to present and prepare an inventive and creative menu.
Wonderful evening at Midtown Oyster Bar for a group of 17. Food and service were amazing. Definitely would go again.
We had fried oysters and shared a bowl of oyster stew. Both were delicious. I also had a Guinness and my wife had a class of Chardonnay. It was a light meal that fit the bill.
The lobster Benedict was amazing.
