Our menu focusses on tacos, ceviche, queso fundidos and seasonal vegetable dishes.
We use fresh masa to make our corn tortillas daily, (they’re gluten free).
Our drink menu focuses on margaritas and cocktails crafted from artisanal Mexican spirits. Beer and wine is also available, with happy hour specials served at our Sunday – Friday, including late night (with $4 cheeseburger tacos!)
We serve dinner 7 nights a week, open from 3pm on the weekend, and offer a Sunday evening prix fixe. Takeout and delivery are also available via Seamless, GrubHub or Caviar.
What Insiders Are Saying
As we’re all well aware, Mexican food in Manhattan generally blows. Empellon hasn’t come to save the day, but it isn’t adding to the problem either. While nothing blew us away, the food was solid with the good outweighing the bad.
Food is excellent but it’s disappointing to have a bill presented to you without asking for one. It just screams ‘get out’ at the end of a meal. Would have stayed for more drinks otherwise.
Thank u, dinner was nice
One of the best Mexican/taco spots in nyc.
Close to Stonewall, this place has an artistic Dali vibe with the beautiful artwork. The cocktails are fantastic and worth it just for that. Tacos a little on the pricey side but so delicious that it makes this a good place to eat or drink or both.
The food is exceptional ... if you are "noise-challenged", request a table in the back when you book your reservation; the front / bar side is VERY loud!!!
Terrific food and cocktails. Some innovative flavors and accents that really make the meal special.
Everything was great.. except the bartender.. he was SO rude. Manager had to comp out drinks. Loved the Brussels sprout tacos.
Way too loud! You don’t understand a word across the table.
Food was not great. I have been in the past numerous times and I remember it being much better. The restaurant also brought every single thing that we ordered at the same time (there wasn’t even enough room on the table - we had to combine dishes) and when we asked if they could take some of it back and space it out more the waitress said that the chef said no.
Happy hour tacos start at 10pm. Good to know for late night meals!
Great food and service
The food was great, our waitress was so friendly and helpful and we could not hear each other speak. The acoustics of the space are awful. If you want to come just to eat, it would be fine. But if you wish to have conversation along with your meal, this is not the place to come.
From the decor, to the food, to the service - all around amazing experience! Came for restaurant week and cannot wait to return and try the full menu.
I have dined here several times for dinner and once for brunch in the fall. Dont bother coming here in the summertime on a weekend for brunch. They have their “D” team in on the line. I should have known because the menu was limited. The guacamole was just ok. The pastrami taco was tasteless. It was very disappointing! We were supposed to go to the Black Ant that day, which is excellent Mexican but they had an incident in their kitchen. It was disappointing because my friend was in town from Australia.
The cocktails were good and the waitress was great. I didn’t say anything but she volunteered to take the Pastrami tacos off the menu. That was unexpected and appreciated. My friend thought his chicken tacos were pretty good.
Best to go for dinner during the week and brunch apres ete.
The food was delicious, but the server wasn't attentive at all. We asked for a menu for the second round and she brought it after 15 min which we already ordered our drinks, and when we said we ordered our drinks she brought us the old ones which indicates has no communication with staff. The ambiance is very new yorker, the locals place which is nice. The cashew sauce is die for.
I hadn’t eaten here in over a year and now I realize I wasn’t missing anything. The staff wasn’t very welcoming., even though the place was only half full. The food was over-cooked — horribly over-cooked. Our glasses were empty for almost 20 minutes before our waiter noticed. This used to be a great local option. I won’t be going back willingly.
really enjoyed our meal but it was extremely loud, this was OK with us but I could see some people not being please with the noise level.
Went for happy hour and the margaritas were great. Delicious guacamole and tacos at great prices.
It was World Pride 2019 and outside was complete and total mayhem, yet inside what is quickly becoming our go-to Mexican, everything ran as flawlessly as ever... Empellón NEVER DISAPPOINTS!
Love this place!!!! Best margaritas in town! PS
Basic. A lot of tables empty. 8pm on a Saturday? I guess the bubble has burst.
Food is good. Not great, but good. Ordered two courses, with the main arriving before the starters had been finished. Big gripe for me as it feels like I’m being rushed out the door. Both courses had been served within twenty minutes of arriving.
Then the service slowed rapidly. Plates weren’t cleared, drink order took time, check didn’t arrive for 15 minutes. Ended up leaving 90 minutes after arrival, despite speed of food.
Despite the empty tables, obnoxiously loud party of eight sat next to us after half an hour. Not the restaurant’s fault, but when you’re only a table of two, it makes an unpleasant atmosphere.
Would I go again? Meh.
We liked it! It was a bit arty, but in a good way. The Pastrami Tacos were super yummy!
Great spot and food!
This place is NOT gf. The server had zero knowledge of cross contamination and gluten in general. He had no desire to help us figure out what was safe. We walked out.
Really delicious. Refreshing take on urban Mexican with unusual ingredients and combinations
My best friend and I were looking for a last minute spot for dinner while I was visiting the city. Excellent food and drinks were shared.
Overall a very good experience! The front room was deafening and we were very grateful to be seated in the back where it was quieter. Food was mostly delicious, with the exception of the kale salad (not bad, just not very good). If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, definitely get the Pastry War!!!
In from out of town. We try to eat all over.the city and try new stuff. Food was great. Waiter was very helpful and personable. The brisket dish is INCREDIBLE. The shishito fundido was an awesome surprise. Have already been recommending it to people...even friends in NYC.
The restaurant actually changed ownership. It is no more called "Empellon Taqueria", but just "Taqueria".
Menu is apparently similar, but food quality is way way lower.
Nothing to deal with how the place was before. It's now a different (and much worse) restaurant.
🌮 Empellón is eyes rolling in the back of you head good! High end Mexican that delivers more than just an expensive bill... Delicious food & top notch service make it worth every penny❤️
the food was really good. the service was excellent. we had a great table. HOWEVER: the noise level was off the charts. it was literally impossible to hear our small party of four talk. in fact, it was ear-splittingly noisy. not again.
Good service overall though they brought out wrong dish and tried to argue I got the order wrong. Not cool. Otherwise everything else A OK!👍🏼
Every single item that we tried on the menu was phenomenal! This is definitely one of my new favorite spots to eat at.
Great food at an amazing price. This restaurant is is one of the best for tacos in NYC!
We had a party of 6 and well behaved children we apart of it. Not only was our server fabulous but the food and drinks matched. Omar was our server and he was beyond accommodating - he made our visit special. This place is a must try and I will certainly come back when we visit next. Definitely try it out, you can thank me later!
Duck tacos were awesome! Service was fabulous and our server remembered the details!
The fish and oyster tacos were good - perfect batter but needed more flavor in the taco. Please bring back the lobster taco. The cashew dip is still fantastic. Love the spicy cucumber margarita but need a little more tequila.
found the cashew salsa heavy handed with the smoked paprika; chicken was dry and kale salad lacked zest. Pork dish saved the experience, along with the server’s attentiveness!
