We came to Jihomakase for my dad’s birthday and had such a lovely lunch. The whole experience was very personal — the chef runs everything himself, from preparing and explaining the ingredients to serving each dish. He is Korean, but his Japanese cuisine is beautifully done. Everything felt clean, precise and well organised, and there was absolutely no strong fishy smell in the restaurant. We chose the lunch omakase at around $80 per person for about 10 courses. It was perfect for us as we had older family members who don’t eat huge portions. If you have a bigger appetite, definitely ask about the extra dishes — we added wagyu for each of us, plus a bottle of Kubota sake, and it made the meal just right. The restaurant is very small and intimate, with only around eight seats around the kitchen. Sitting at the counter means you can watch the whole process, which was probably my favourite part. The chef also explained and showed us the ingredients as he prepared them. He told us he personally selects the ingredients every morning, which really came through in the quality. For my dad’s birthday, he even prepared an extra mango mochi-style dessert and wished my dad “万寿无疆” (wishing him a long and healthy life) in Chinese. Such a thoughtful little touch. The whole lunch took around two hours and felt very relaxed and smooth. There are also plenty of sake options if you enjoy sake. At the end, the chef personally walked us to the door, which was a lovely way to finish the meal. Overall, a really comfortable and thoughtful omakase experience. Highly recommended for a small celebration, a date, or if you want to take your parents somewhere special without an overly formal or rushed atmosphere. One tip: if you’re worried $80 won’t be enough for a bigger appetite, just quietly ask the chef about extra dishes. He’s happy to add more for an additional charge. We’ll definitely come back. ❤️

About the restaurant
Rengaya has been serving YAKINIKU in North Sydney since 1993, making it one of Australia’s pioneering Japanese barbeque restaurants. Now, that tradition is set to continue at its new digs on Miller Street – just a short stroll from the original location – in a much more modern, striking setting. The new fit-out features bar-counter seats around an open kitchen, red booth seating divided by Japanese-style timber panelling and a hard-to-miss chandelier. There’s also a 20-seat private dining room. We use only the finest ingredients such as Japanese Black Cattle made in Australia for beef, Sashimi and Seafood fresh from the sea. Rengaya is the restaurant foodies around the country have chosen.

About the restaurant
Escaping to France has never been more effortless than at L’Héritage, a breathtaking waterfront jewel nestled on Mosman’s lower North Shore. Perched on Chowder Bay's scenic wharf, this romantic French bistro occupies a historic former Navy drill hall. Framed by national park greenery and sweeping Sydney Harbour views, the dining room balances heritage charm with coastal sophistication. Flickering candlelight and the soothing sounds of the sea create an enchanting, alfresco-kissed vibe. Head Chef Julien Audibert-Lebon delivers a technicolor celebration of flavours by marrying local Australian produce with timeless European techniques, earning the venue an AGFG Chef Hat. Savour his exquisite signature Bouillabaisse with fresh seafood, or opt for the Canard à l’Orange featuring rich duck leg confit and velvety gratin dauphinois. Pair your meal with a pour from the cellar, boasting Three Glasses at Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards.

L'Heritage is a favourite of ours. Good quality, authentic French food in a friendly setting, away from the crowds. You have to go a little out of your way to get there but it's worth the trip. Good wine selection (including BYO Wednesday) make it an easy choice. The team are great as well.
