ST. JOHN Bread & Wine reflects the rhythms of its locale whilst observing the same respect for seasonal, indigenous ingredients and "the whole beast" as the bigger sister restaurant. Opening for breakfast, lunch and supper seven days a week, this branch very much beats its own drum with a menu structured towards a slightly less formal manner of dining, with guests actively encouraged to share dishes as they're ready from the kitchen.

As well as selling goods to take home from our bakery, wines by the bottle or the case can be bought from our lists to take home with some delivery available.

Bread & Wine has been voted Best British Restaurant by the Evening Standard and named as best value restaurant by The Observer Food Monthly.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.5

St John Bread and Wine serves food from the legendary St. John in Farringdon, but in an informal canteen-style dining room near Spitalfields Market.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

We were with family for Xmas, 4 adults and three young adults. The restaurant exceeded all expectations. The Pheasant and Trotter Pie, Roasted Marrow Bone and Marrowwhite were all fantastic! We will be back!

Excellent service over a very long lunch for 4. Sharing dishes worked well, although the portion sizes vary a lot, so we should have ordered 2 of some. Everyone's favourite dish was the smoked cods roe. Hard to pick a runner up, but perhaps a tie between the Ox tail and ducks hearts.
Atmosphere was very lively and buzzing.

I went with a friend for dinner. We had a mixture of the main dishes (we have big appetites). The trotter and sausage casserole and mackerel were good. Nice ambience and good service.

The food served was great. We had the herring which was really fresh, served with mash potatoes - the mash was to die for.
Of course for dessert, we had the madeleines. Amazing!

Atmosphere was quite staid. Staff seemed to be going through the motions. Mussels were gritty and broth thin and the serving was paltry. Other food was ok but overall very underwhelming.

We had our usual corner table & settled in for a familiar treat. Soon the restaurant filled up & the noise level started to rise. There was a large group of mostly men, who looked like they were out for an office do. They got louder as they got drunker. We asked our waiter if he could have a word with them, but it made no difference. It reached unbearable levels as they vied to have selfies with the suckling pig. We left earlier than usual, ears ringing and tempers fizzing. Not the usual delightful evening that we three friends usually enjoy, sad to say

Service was great, and the food is as usual fantastic. Particularly I enjoyed the beef mince on duck fat fried toast, it was so flavorful. I loved the white cabbage with brown shrimps too, delicious yet simple. Would love to come back soon to try out other dishes.

Good location to get away from business sector. Easy to talk. Service was great, everything was well explained. Food very unusual and created taste explosions! Good wine options, some light enough for lunch!
Nice room, not fussy or pretentious.

Our meal and service were both excellent. I was just a bit disappointed, though, as I'd asked for a nice table as we were lunching to celebrate my birthday, yet we were given a little table hard up against the wall. That aside, all was as good as it could be.

This is a restaurant we have been a few times. Excellent food, nice ambient, nice and efficient people, good wine. The only regret is not to have been able, this time, to eat the wonderful Devonshire Buns. I would definitely recommend it! Mario Segall (17th November lunch).

Food was tremendous and it didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately we missed out on the marrow bones by minutes. The waiter was pushy on how much we should order and tad inattentive but he was helpful on when we saught suggestions on what to order. I would definitely eat at any of Fergus Henderson’s restaurants again and hopefully the marrow bones are available that day.
