The Hare and Billett

Great roast dinners and wonderful starters but the table was very dark and noise level very high for a Sunday evening- will be back though!
Lovely food, quick service and great place for a pub Sunday dinner.
Excellent Christmas Eve meal! Lovely service, welcoming for kids - thank you!
Fab sunday lunch with friends, unfortunately we were shoehorned next to a long table of about 20 so the noise was unbearable. The food was excellent, in particular the Venison which was outstanding (if not extremely hot) some confusion about sprouts and bread sauce (only available if you'd pre-booked Turkey, but not if you had roast turkey of the a al carte menu - seemed a bit mean to us) - staff were flat out but remained friendly...
Love, love, love this place. Great food and drinks and the staff are friendly and welcoming. We look forward to coming back very soon.
The food was cold, poor quality and over priced.
I would not return.
It was great that they have gluten-free gravy to go with the Sunday roast. However, they still put the Yorkshire pudding in the plate. I wished that they gave us more potatoes instead of Yorkshire pudding. The food was nicely cooked but we found the portion was on the small side.
Food was excellent everyone in our party of 8 enjoyed their food , exceptional customer service in a really relaxed and friendly pub would highly recommend for groups.
Welcoming atmosphere, lovely staff, amazing food. I love the Hare and Billet!
This is a lovely pub that I occasionally visit for lunch. Our most recent visit was for Sunday roast. Had to wait a little while as it was really busy, but quite acceptable. Food was excellent and the service very friendly.
The Hare and Billett is our favourite pub in Blackheath and this is the 5th time of visiting as we were looking after our grandson in Eltham. Food as always, was delicious - although the sprouts were a little hard!!! It was difficult to chose what we wanted as everything sounded as if we should try it all out. Our friend is vegetarian and was impressed by the choice she had. Above all, the staff were fantastic. What a helpful and friendly bunch they are. Nothing was too much trouble and they were lovely with our grandson who was desperate to explore everything.
Will definitely be returning again and again and again........ Thank you Hare and Billett!!!
Staff very accommodating, had huge pram, and I changed the number of people for booking. Good food and relaxed Sunday atmosphere
Great staff, brilliant atmosphere and lovely menu. We love The Hare and Billet!
Having booked 4 weeks in advance we arrived to nobody able to seat us and had to ask at the bar if we were able to be shown our table.
We were taken to a table where we were told we have to move due to having our dog with us and only allowed out table up to 5pm as it was re booked. This was ok as we had to be somewhere
We ordered drinks and was hounded 3 x to order our food. we ordered but then waiting over an hour for it to arrive and it was marginally hot - more tepid. We were frustrated at this point and said we would pay for our drinks and leave as we didn't want our food microwaved.
The management offered to remove the food from our bill but we rather we left, she became abrupt and wouldn't let us leave without trying multiple times to justify why this had happened. It was due to lack of kitchen staff to which my partner replied that they should not be taking orders if they could not sustain them.
We paid for our drinks and the manager even followed us out of the establishment and tried to justify the issues which I found intimidating and unnecessary.
We will not be returning.
A very tasty dinner. The roasts and pie were very good.
Great service. Very impressed overall.
Very nice – busy on a Sunday afternoon, we booked several days in advance. Lovely roast pork.
Good quality pub food in comfortable surroundings, great choice of real ale and craft beers,
Really disappointed by the service we had at The Hare and Billet. Firstly, upon arrival, we had to stand around waiting for our table whilst staff walked past us ignoring us. My boyfriend did of course let them know that we had arrived for our reservation and there were plenty of free tables, so I’m not sure why this happened. Eventually, I had to ask the same waiter we’d originally spoken to to seat us, which earned me a look of contempt but got us our table.
Moving onto the food, the burger was really sub par - two thin and dry patties. In addition, there was a mix up with my order and I was brought the wrong food. These things happen, but we received no apology when I let them know about the mix up, the waiter just yanked my plate away. I then had to wait whilst everyone else ate their dinner. I did eventually get a half hearted “sorry for the mix up” later, but that was it. In fact, they even added service charge to the bill. When we asked to remove it because of the issues with the mix up, the waiter did so but then proceeded to let us know we could leave a cash tip if we wanted, unbelievable 😂 The whole thing felt like a Fawlty Towers skit - we could see dishes going to the wrong tables all around us and some of the wait staff are really not suited for customer service roles (I say this as someone who has done their fair share of bar work). What a shame as apart from the burger the food is excellent.
The staff were so friendly and accommodating. Couldnt have had a lovelier lunch. Will definitely be back!
Perfect venue for a Sunday roast. Great food and quick and efficient service. My new local!
Below average roast dinner. I honestly don't understand how this place has been rated so highly. My Chicken was undercooked, yorkshire pudding was dry , the potatoes were underwhelming and there was hardly any gravy on the plate.
A lovely local for a cold wet night outside. Cosy inside with a great drinks selection and a frequently changing food menu. The food is always exceptional and didn’t disappoint and the staff/ service is attentive and professional. A favourite of ours which definitely get many more repeat visits
So friendly and relaxed. Those that live nearby are lucky!
We booked at the Hare and Billet as it is dog friendly and needed somewhere accessible friendly. From the moment we arrived the guy working was so friendly and really went above and beyond. The service was impeccable and food fantastic.
We will definitely return, and have recommended to friends already
The service was slow, table was sticky and didn't feel clean. Food was nice but the atmosphere, lack of attentive staff and price let it down.
The food is always delicious, however the service fell down due how busy it was. Our dinners came out at different times and when mine finally arrived, it was the wrong one.
There was also an extremely high level of children present, which isn’t great for a relaxing and quiet Sunday roast.
Really lovely Sunday Roast. We had Chicken, Beef and the Venison all very well cooked. Two desserts - one amazing Apple and Pear Crumble and a Chocolate Fondant with a tasty pistachio Ice cream. All and all a very pleasant Sunday afternoon
Vegan fish and chips was poor - mostly batter and just a regular slice of tofu inside, with a small portion of cheap tasting/looking chips. The food was also cold when brought out so we had to wait ages for new food to be made. For £12.50 it’s a bit of a joke, when you can get much nicer, more generously portioned vegan fish & chips elsewhere for a fair bit less (eg By Chloe). Clearly vegan options are just an after thought for Hare & Billet. I won’t be coming back or recommending this.
Busy Saturday night, great atmosphere.
Our food was slow to come out, and unfortunately some of the mains tasted like they sat under a lamp for a while - but it just didn't matter, as the wait staff were transparent, apologetic, and really lovely about it.
We had a great time, the starters and snacks were fantastic (the yorkshire pudding with the salt beef in particular). Good wine too. It's fairly on the expensive side, but is a justified cost for the quality in my opinion. Would definitely recommend.
If dogs could speak English as opposed to Woof they would describe this pub as follows :-
‘I was very impressed with the general fruity smell of this place . Plenty of decent growl on site , a couple of silly looking ones wearing designer coats. Jars of our favourite biscuits strategically placed , a lot of general patting from the two leggers and all seemed to be drinking lots of the brown water which they had to pay for but seemed happy enough . My two leggers shared some of their heated up Chum and thankfully saved me some of their leftovers at normal room temperature
Best roast I’ve had in London! Great service too, friendly staff!
Always we wanted to get a place here about the amazing reviews and they aren’t wrong! Food is amazing.Service was amazing ! 5*
So I wanted to surprise my husband for his birthday with a table there
We know is a beautiful place to come with family and friends but unfortunately I didn’t enjoy our table . It was on the middle of the room. It was very cold and confusing for someone like me that has an “invisible” disability .
I asked if was available other tables but they told me they could keep the main door close. Guess what? After few minutes the door was open again and again:
So as experience it was ok but I think sometimes we need to listen when a customer “plead”they can’t heard and they feel uncomfortable .
Hi Georgia, I am glad you like our pub and despite the location of the table you still gave us 4 stars. Unfortunately Sunday is our busiest day and we didn't have any other table available as we were fully booked. I would suggest next time you make a booking, to call the pub or email us and request a table in the dining room, which is at the back and is way more quiet. Please accept my apologies, they should explain that there weren't other tables available, Kind regards, Natalia
it was a Thursday night so understandably there were high spirits in the pub. Trouble was there was one geezer who was swearing at the top of his voice and this went on all through our meal barely feet away. Awkward as the crowd he was in was enveloped in a haze of booze too. Not a place - or a time - to complain. We asked to be moved towards the end of the meal but staff were reluctant as they said they were trying to shut down the restaurant space. They apologised afterwards. Too late then though.
Hi TenbyDeckchair, I truly apologise for what happened, I have already had a conversation with my staff and I can guarantee you that it won't happen again. I work hard to give this pub a good reputation, to keep a good crowd inside and to accommodate our customers. They should have given you a table at the back while dealing with the person who was too loud. This doesn't reflect the standards that I set for my pub, please accept my apologies and I hope you will return to give us another chance.
A wonderful atmosphere. My partner and I love coming here as it reminds us of a pub back home jn Suffolk! The food is absolutely beautiful and a lovely way to spend a sunday afternoon!
This is my local pub so I really want to love it but I think it’s mediocre. I had a quick sandwich there on Monday and it was a slice of steak grissle in a stale bun. The best bit was the addition of a couple of onion rings which were delicious. I’d had Sunday lunch there with a friend and it was nice.
Good pub food and good service. I have no complaints about today.
We have been coming here for Sunday roasts for nearly 3 years.
We love it! You can take your dog! The roasts are tasty And large! And the staff are really friendly.
I will say that the roast potatoes have gone downhill a little :( , but apart from that! It’s still one of the best places for roasts on a Sunday in south east London.
I would really recommend it.
Food is always delicious and cool superbly here. The waiting staff always look after us so well. We go regularly.
Popped in for lunch, we had poached eggs and avocado on sour dough bread. The eggs and avocado were lovely, the bread was very thick and could of been thinner and toasted more. Overall a nice place for lunch.
Favourite pub; always great. Staff are fantastic. Love it there.
