Italian
Downtown

Red Ash Italia delivers a high-octane dining experience focused on wood-fired northern Italian flavors in the heart of Downtown Austin. The atmosphere is industrial and moody, centered around a custom-built, wood-burning grill and oven that bathes the dining room in a warm, amber glow. Executive chef John Carver leads the kitchen with a philosophy of red-ash cooking, a nod to the smoldering coals used to sear meats and vegetables. The restaurant has earned consistent acclaim from Austin Monthly and the Austin American-Statesman as a premier destination for handmade pasta and prime cuts. The wood-roasted, vine-ripened tomatoes and the garganelli with wild mushroom ragù are essential orders that highlight the kitchen’s mastery over fire and flour.

Este brings the bright, refreshing flavors of coastal Mexican cuisine to a beautifully converted warehouse space in East Austin. The setting is airy and vibrant, featuring a lush garden that provides many of the kitchen’s fresh herbs and vegetables, creating an oasis-like feel just blocks from the city’s bustle. Chef Fermín Núñez and restaurateur Sam Hellman-Mass, the duo also behind the critically acclaimed Suerte, launched Este to immediate fanfare, securing a spot on Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America list and earning praise from The Infatuation. The menu celebrates the bounty of the Gulf and beyond with a heavy emphasis on charcoal-grilled seafood and raw bar selections. The trout tostada and the camarones el ruso are standout dishes that showcase the kitchen’s precision and sourcing philosophy. By prioritizing sustainable seafood and heirloom corn, Este offers a dining experience that feels both rooted in Mexican tradition and perfectly attuned to Austin’s modern, ingredient-driven palate.

Comedor is a modern Mexican powerhouse located Downtown designed with a striking, minimalist aesthetic by architect Tom Kundig that creates a sanctuary of steel, glass, and greenery. The atmosphere is sophisticated and high-energy, making it a central hub for the city’s design-conscious diners. Chef Philip Speer, a multiple James Beard Award semifinalist, oversees a menu that deconstructs and reimagines traditional Mexican flavors through a contemporary lens. The restaurant has been lauded by Food & Wine and Eater Austin for its architectural approach to plating and flavor. Signature items like the bone marrow tacos and the smoked tuna tostada highlight a menu that refuses to play it safe. Comedor’s philosophy is built on the rigorous exploration of Mexican techniques, ensuring that every component—from the house-nixtamalized masa to the intricate salsas—is executed with a level of detail that makes it one of the best restaurants in Austin.

My husband and I had a fabulous time at Comedor. We sat at the bar - highly recommend - and the bartender was more of a waiter and food critic. He gave us great suggestions for our tastes. All the food was fabulous, including the tuna appetizer to the fish tacos to the NY Strip. I also had a margarita which was next level. The ambience, the bar, the crowd - it was all amazing.

Emmer & Rye is a pioneer of the Rainey Street District, famous for its commitment to heritage grains and a dim sum-style service model that brings small plates directly to diners.
