Philadelphia‘s dining scene has long been one of America’s most underrated — and its 2025 MICHELIN Guide debut confirmed what locals already knew. The city that gave America the cheesesteak and the soft pretzel is also home to the James Beard Award-winning tasting menu that marries classic French technique with flavors of the African diaspora, a 28-seat Cambodian noodle house whose banh chow salad made the New York Times’ best dishes of the year, and a pasta bar set in a century-old Italian Market butcher shop that earned a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. Three restaurants earned stars in the inaugural guide, and the city’s most exciting new openings — an Alpine-inflected Mediterranean kitchen in Kensington, a Corsican-and-Sardinian restaurant inside a historic Fishtown hotel — have only deepened the argument for Philadelphia as one of the best places to eat in America right now. From Rittenhouse Square to Old City, the best restaurants in Philadelphia reward serious attention.

The best restaurants in Philadelphia await. Book your table on OpenTable and discover where to eat and drink in Philadelphia today.

Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten takes to the sky at one of Philly’s most dramatic restaurant spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide an unforgettable backdrop for celebratory cocktails or a special-occasion meal at the top of the Four Seasons Hotel in Center City. It’s a fitting atmosphere to splurge on Osetra caviar, or you could go for something more casual but equally good, such as black truffle and fontina pizza.

Had a great experience at SkyHigh! The atmosphere was amazing, the place was clean, and the overall vibe was on point. Everything was well organized, and the experience was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great time. Definitely coming back!

Wife-and-husband duo Hanna and Chad Williams purchased this beloved neighborhood spot in 2015, transforming it into one of the city’s top tasting-menu destinations—and a James Beard Award-winner and one of the city’s first-ever MICHELIN Stars. Ever-evolving seasonal dishes like sweetbreads with plantains and mushrooms are elegant but never fussy, as is service in the cozy and bright dining room. Swing by the restaurant’s downstairs bar, a James Beard finalist, for a post-dinner cocktail.

First time at this restaurant and it exceeded expectations! Homemade sodas were interesting and refreshing. The burger was well prepared and the fries were well cooked and seasoned. The desserts were excellent - chocolate torte and apple cobbler.

Located in a historic butcher shop decked with a striking Venetian glass chandelier, the intimate restaurant serves up stellar seasonal pasta that could include cavatelli with ramps and shrimp. All the Jean-Georges Vongerichten signatures that made the global celebrity chef famous, from egg toast with caviar to yellowfin tuna noodles in ginger dressing, are present in the six-course tasting at this fine-dining Philly outpost in the Four Seasons. But there are also local takes on dishes using seasonal ingredients from the Rittenhouse Farmers Market nearby Lancaster Farms Company. It all makes for a high-end experience unique to the city.

Fishtown

Bastia is a stylish Mediterranean restaurant inside Fishtown’s Michelin Key Hotel Anna & Bel with executive chef Michael McDonough at the helm. Pull up a seat at the bar or settle into a cozy table by the fireplace to dig into seafood-forward dishes and handmade pastas inspired by the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia. Pair it with playful cocktails and riffs on classic aperitivi. This is an all-day cafe made for lingering.

Bastia at Hotel Anna & Bel is the effortlessly cool girl who makes it look easy. Excels at everything, but you still absolutely adore her. The Strait of Bonifacio cocktail was insanely good: bright citrus, briny salinity, just enough herbal depth. But the lorighittas with wild boar sugo, English peas, and sunflower seed? My last-meal request. Notify the appropriate people. Shaved artichoke, skate cheeks, storzapretti, swordfish brochettes. A menu that understands I left the house and put on real pants for something I’m not making in my own kitchen (and couldn’t if I tried!). Deep green walls, patterned tile, dark wood, art with attitude. Warm lighting, plush booths, a fireplace. Old-world character with a little edge. The courtyard pool lit up at night makes booking a room feel like a perfectly reasonable next step. The 18th-century property once sheltered widows and single women before becoming Penn Home. Women, history, excellent taste. Feels like a strong case for the matriarchy. It houses soul that no design budget could accomplish on its own. Service was impeccable. My wine glass never stayed empty. I felt understood. Already plotting my return.

Belly up to the raw bar in the center of the space to watch the pros shuck oysters in seconds. Cocktails include a mini menu of oyster shooters and an impressively deep selection of gin.

The only Philadelphia restaurant on Esquire’s Best New Restaurants 2025 list, Emmett has emerged as one of the most exciting tables in the city since chef Evan Snyder and partner Julian van der Tak — a former chef born in Marseille to a French-Algerian family — opened it on West Girard Avenue in early 2025. The menu is Mediterranean in the broadest and most generous sense: Levantine spice blends, North African herbs, French technique, Italian pasta formats, all working together through Snyder’s own culinary imagination. Sesame-crusted madeleines with ras el hanout butter to start; dry-aged duck breast with pear, dates, and saffron-fennel purée; halibut wrapped in sea lettuce and served in green harissa. A rye tartlet with American wagyu tartare and a lamb fat-washed rye cocktail have both become signatures at this boundary-pushing modern restaurant.

First of all, the tasting menu was incredible. There was not a single item that came out that my wife and I weren’t blown away by. The flavors were amazing. They also offer a very unique and delicious cocktail menu (NA too!). The wait staff was on top of things at every turn. We’re so glad we picked Emmett to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We cannot wait to come back.
